The Coronavirus pandemic has suspended all sporting events, including tennis; as the sport’s all major tournaments on the ATP have been suspended till August. In football, the Bundesliga in Germany has restarted with empty stadiums and without the cheer of the crowds and the other major leagues like the Premier League are likely to follow the suit.

While the governing bodies of tennis are trying their best to restart the sports’ proceedings, the world number 4, Roger Federer has expressed his concern on the new trend of playing in empty stadiums, without the fans.

“In my view, I can’t see an empty stadium,” said Federer. “I cannot. I hope that doesn’t happen. Even if most of the time we are training there is no one, everything is quiet, in silence. For us, of course, it is possible to play without any fans. But on the other hand, I really hope that the circuit can return as it normally is”.

The 20 times Grand Slam winner further suggested that the sport’s governing bodies should wait for the appropriate time to return to normal mode again. “At least a third of the stadium or half full,” he said.

On the contrary, British number one Dan Evans thinks holding the tournament without fans would be an “amazing spectacle”. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Evans said, “Me, personally, I would love it to go ahead.” “I think it would send out a real statement that we can get back going. It could be an amazing spectacle that tennis goes ahead with no-one in the stadium, and everybody watching on telly” he added.
