A college in the Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh has prevented students from wearing hijabs and saffron scarfs amid a raging controversy in Karnataka over restrictions imposed on Muslim girls wearing a headscarf in educational institutions. We'll not allow students to enter the campus with covered faces. Students are not allowed to wear saffron stole or hijab on college premises, said the college's principal, Dr Raj Kumar Verma. Chennai, Feb 10 (PTI) Seeking to show his 'opposition' to the BJP's pro-NEET stand, a 38-year old man on Thursday hurled petrol 'bombs' at the Tamil Nadu headquarters of the BJP here, police said.Demanding a National Investigation Agency probe, the state unit of the BJP dismissed as a 'film dialogue', the police tagging the test issue being the likely motive.The principal opposition AIADMK alleged that the attack showed deterioration of law and order.The government has the duty to probe the case in all the angles and bring the true culprits to book, AIADMK coordinator, O Panneerselvam said.Saffron party TN president, K Annamalai, speaking to reporters said that anti-national forces and fundamentalists should be arrested and condemned the attack.He demanded that the ruling DMK do 'self-introspection' and he alleged deterioration of law and order in the state.The attack on his party office is only a continuation of an increase in violence and other crimes, he alleged.The BJP chief underscored a 'pattern' by listing out crimes targeted at party functionaries and offices in other places of the state since February 9 evening.Annamalai said that in Nagapattinam, a car of an office-bearer was burnt and offices set up to coordinate urban civic polls related work were vandalised in Chennai, Tirupur and Vellore.Such attacks showed a clear pattern and a larger criminal conspiracy as well, he claimed.The police citing the test row as the motive hence cannot be accepted, he said and alleged that police 'cleaned' the evidence. FIR was 'not filed' and none from the forensic wing collected materials for examination, the BJP leader alleged. He wondered 'why water was poured' on evidence related things and taken away by police.A proper examination and probe vis-a-vis the scene of crime should be done rather than stating that it was an act by a Goonda to show his opposition to the party's stand on NEET, he said.This is like a film dialogue. The BJP demands NIA probe and the anti-national forces and fundamentalists should be brought to book, whoever they may be. NIA probe is the only solution and only that would prevent recurrence of such incidents. The Tamil Nadu government should hand over the case to the NIA. In the early hours, after setting fire to three bottles filled with petrol, the man in his thirties threw them at the BJP state headquarters. No one was injured.The man, a known history-sheeter, arrived on a two-wheeler and quickly fled the spot after hurling the bottles at the entrance area of the party office.Police was alerted immediately and a team of officials inspected the spot and CCTV cameras were scrutinised. The BJP HQ is located in downtown T Nagar.It was found that the miscreant was 38-year old Vinoth alias 'Karukka' Vinoth, who faces a bunch of criminal cases including attempts to murder and he was arrested, a city police release said.According to a preliminary probe, there is no political or religious aspect to this attack and Vinoth has a history of carrying out such attacks, under the influence of alcohol, in matters of public interest.The probe revealed that he had thrown the bottles to show his opposition to the BJP's stand supporting the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test. The investigation is continuing.In 2015, he had thrown a petrol bomb at a liquor retail outlet and in 2017 at the entrance of Teynampet police station here in connection with some issues. He was arrested in both the cases and had been remanded to judicial custody.In a statement, the AIADMK top leader, condemned the attack and urged Chief Minister M K Stalin to ensure that such attacks does not happen again.Union Minister of state L Murugan strongly condemned the 'cowardly act' and said it showed the state government's failure.He too demanded NIA probe and in a statement said that such 'tactics of threat' would not stop the brave party workers in serving the people.Barring the BJP, other political parties in Tamil Nadu are opposed to the national entrance test for medical admissions and on February 8, a Bill was adopted again by the Assembly to bypass the examination in the state.

Chennai, Jan 30 (PTI) DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday exhorted his party cadres to work with enthusiasm to emerge victorious in the upcoming urban civic polls and by reminding the people of the 'struggles' endured by Tamil Nadu during the 2011-21 AIADMK regime. Stalin asked party workers to expose the BJP's 'destructive, communal' politics and lashed out at the main opposition AIADMK for uttering only 'lies.' The DMK's 'Dravidian model' of good governance and inclusive growth based on the ideals of social justice, self-respect, religious harmony and non-discrimination based on caste is the party's tool in the urban civic polls, Stalin told the party workers in an open letter. The urban civic polls for 12,838 posts in corporations, municipalities and town panchayats are scheduled to be held on February 19 in a single phase. The counting of votes would be taken up on February 22. The DMK chief asked cadres to work with gusto for the urban local body polls by reaching out to the people on the party-led government's good governance, achievements and welfare initiatives despite financial burden faced by the state government. Stalin asked DMK office-bearers and workers to remind the people about the 'struggles' endured by Tamil Nadu during the AIADMK rule for 10 years, between 2011-21. The principal opposition party with an evil thought is uttering only lies everyday in order to besmirch the good name of the DMK government among the people, the Chief Minister alleged. Tell the people that only now light has begun to shine. Targeting the BJP, Stalin alleged that the national party was trying to sow the seeds of religious chauvinism among the people and stoke communal violence so as to gain political mileage. Such 'communal, destructive' politics of the BJP should be uncovered, he told DMK workers. Slamming the AIADMK and BJP who are allies, Stalin said both the parties are against the people's welfare and were together trying to ruin Tamil Nadu and this has to be conveyed to the electorate. Remind the people about their unique quality of not giving room for communal politics, he said. Stalin's allegation against the Saffron party comes close on the heels of the BJP seeking 'justice' for the suicide of a 17-year old girl, a school student and inmate of a hostel run by that institution in Thanjavur district. Some in the school were accused of coercing her to convert to Christianity. The school management has however rejected that allegation. Stalin said the Secular Democratic Alliance led by the DMK in Tamil Nadu is not a mere arrangement among parties for elections but it is a coalition built on ideology and hence the 'pure friendliness' should continue. The CM advised his party office-bearers to work towards allocating appropriate number of seats to allies in their respective areas without giving room for any friction with functionaries of alliance parties. The selection of DMK nominees for polls should be done impartially, in a disciplined manner and the process should be similar to the stringent norms followed for recruiting candidates for the Armed forces. Those facing criminal cases should not be chosen as party nominees, he advised party office-bearers.After choosing candidates, party men should work for their victory and similarly, party office-bearers and workers should wholeheartedly work and extend their full cooperation for the success of candidates of alliance parties. The DMK chief told the party workers to seek votes by underscoring the achievements of the party-led government and the welfare initiatives implemented despite severe financial constraints. The effective handling of the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic should be underlined, he said. Similar to previous civic poll victories, let us win the urban civic polls and take forward the good governance, he added. In the 2019 rural civic polls and in elections to rural local bodies in 9 other districts including Kanchipuram, the DMK emerged victorious. The Rs 4,000 COVID-19 cash relief, slashing the price of state-run 'Aavin' milk by Rs 3 per litre, fare free travel in town buses for women were among the pre-poll promises that have been fulfilled by the DMK government which assumed power in May 2021. Recently, Stalin had said that his government had fulfilled over 300 electoral promises out of the 500 plus assurances made in the run up to the Assembly elections held in April 2021.

Chennai, Jan 22 (PTI) There is no room at all for forcible conversions in Tamil Nadu, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department Minister, P K Sekar Babu said here on Saturday. Taking potshots at the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP, Sekar Babu said, ahead of the 'Thai Poosam' festival last year the Saffron party had taken out 'Vel' (spear) rallies in the state chanting slogans of 'Veera Vel' and 'Vetri Vel.' He asked, do you now see display of Vel (by BJP people) anywhere, adding the BJP did not organise such events this year coinciding with the festival, the Minister told reporters. Unlike the BJP, his party the DMK and Chief Minister M K Stalin regarded all religions equally, Babu said. 'Annaithu mathamum sammatham (All religions are acceptable),' he said. Against such a background, there is no room at all for forcible conversions in Tamil Nadu, the Minister asserted. In connection with the death of a 17-year old girl student by suicide in Thanjavur district days ago, the BJP had alleged coercion by the management of a school to convert her to Christianity. The party had alleged that it was the reason that had led to her suicide, an inmate of the school run hostel. Months ahead of the April 2021 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu, the BJP had held the 'Vetrivel yatra' or 'Vel yatra' campaign. Though the state-wide BJP yatra was not allowed (Nov- Dec 2020) by the then AIADMK government due to the pandemic, the party had held public meetings at multiple locations and leaders had courted arrest. In January 2021, now Union Minister and then BJP state unit chief L Murugan had said that it was his party's Vel yatra that had prompted DMK president Stalin to 'hold a Vel.' This year, 'Thai Poosam' was celebrated on January 18. Thai refers to Tamil month that commences every year in January and Poosam is a reference to star. Public holiday was declared for the festival by the then AIADMK government in January 2021. According to Shaivite tradition, Thai Poosam commemorates the presentation of a spear to Lord Muruga by his mother Goddess Parvathi with which he destroyed evil forces and the festival symbolised victory of good over evil.
