German winger Serge Gnabry scored twice in the first half and Robert Lewandowski scored his 55th goal this season to beat Lyon in the Champions League semi-final on Thursday.

Lyon missed two golden opportunities through Memphis Depay and Karl Toko-Ekambi in the first half which will haunt them for a long time as Gnabry blasted Bayern into an 18th-minute lead seconds later. He has now scored nine in nine appearances in this season’s competition.

With Lewandowski’s goal, Bayern now has 42 goals in 10 Champions League outings this season. Having won five European Cups, the German giants will be playing their 11th final against Paris Saint-Germain. They had last qualified for the finals in their treble wining season in 2013.

Hansi Flick’s men now have 20 consecutive victories and are unbeaten in 29 matches, a run that began last December. After a disastrous beginning under ex-coach Niko Kovac, Bayern has transformed into one of the most feared teams in Europe under Flick.

Lyon’s campaign comes to a disappointing end, after beating Juventus and Manchester City on their way to the semi-finals. Adding up to the disappointment will be the fact that they will not be playing in the Champions League next season after coming seventh in Ligue 1.
