Tamil actor Siddharth
caused a social media storm after his offensive tweet about badminton player
Saina Nehwal recently went viral. The actor has finally put an end to the
incident after issuing an apology to Saina.

On Tuesday night, the actor
shared a lengthy letter on Twitter addressing Saina. Siddharth apologised to
Saina and stated that the disparity in their views cannot justify his poor
choice of words, adding that he has more grace than the words he had used in
his tweet. He further added that he did not have any malicious intent and
supports feminism. The actor concluded his apology with “you will always be my
champion”.

The controversy
erupted after Saina tweeted a statement on a security lapse during PM Narendra
Modi’s
visit to Punjab. The prime minister’s convoy was stalled by protesting
farmers who had blocked a flyover.

Many
internet users took to social media to share their opinions on the security
lapse. Saina, who joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020, strongly
condemned the breach through a statement on Twitter.

Responding to the
tweet, the Tamil and Telugu actor had tweeted “Subtle cock champion of the
world… Thank God we have protectors of India.” The tweet instantly faced
a backlash for being sexually suggestive and inappropriate.

The actor then went
on to issue a clarification on Twitter, stating that attaching negative connotations to
the tweet was “unfair”.

The tweet also drew
the attention of the National Commission of Women (NCW), whose chairperson
wrote to the Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu police seeking investigation of
the offensive tweet. Furthermore, the commission appealed to Twitter India to
ban the actor’s account.

Saina stated that the
actor could have chosen better words to express himself. Saina’s partner,
Parupalli Kashyap, also took to Twitter to slam Siddharth, calling him
“disgraceful”.
