Mumbai, May 17 (PTI) NCP MP Supriya Sule on Tuesday said she will break the arm of any man who dares to assault a woman in Maharashtra.The Member of Parliament from Baramati was speaking in Jalgaon a day after a woman worker of her party was allegedly assaulted by BJP workers in Pune.The incident took place on Monday when NCP workers tried to present a memorandum on LPG cylinder price hike to Union minister Smriti Irani during the latter's visit to Pune.Referring to it, Sule wondered if a man assaulting a woman was consistent with Marathi culture.“This is a Maharashtra of Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Babasaheb Ambedkar and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. They always respected women, she said.I am telling you, if any man raises his hand to beat a woman in the state henceforth, I will go there myself and file a case in the court against him. I will break his arm and hand it over to him,” the NCP leader further said.Pune police on late Monday night registered a case of assault and molestation against three BJP workers for allegedly assaulting the woman NCP activist. The local unit of the BJP termed the allegations as false.Asked about Sule's comment, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis told reporters in Nagpur that she should take such a stand in all cases.“She did not speak up after what happened to (MP) Navneet Rana. Chitale was arrested on Saturday from Navi Mumbai over the post she allegedly shared on her Facebook page. The post shared by Chitale was purportedly written by someone else. It contained phrases like hell is waiting and you hate Brahmins, allegedly referring to the NCP president. I don't know her. This is the issue of culture. I am thankful to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis and MNS chief Raj Thackeray for speaking out against such a post, Sule told reporters in Nashik. Mumbai, May 12 (PTI) NCP MP Supriya Sule on Thursday wrote to Maharashtra Minister Hasan Mushrif demanding that special meetings be organised by gram panchayats in the state to pass a resolution banning rituals of widowhood. Sule's demand has come after a resolution was passed by Herwad village in Shirol of Kolhapur district on May 4 banning the practice of women breaking bangles, wiping off 'kumkum' (vermillion) from the forehead and removing the mangalsutra of a widow as part of rituals that have been handed down over time. The NCP leader said meetings should be organised on May 31, the birth anniversary of 18th century noble ruler of erstwhile Malwa kingdom Ahilyadevi Holkar. Sule shared a copy of the letter on Twitter. “Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar's birth anniversary is on Tuesday, May 31. All gram panchayats in the state should organise special gram sabhas on the occasion to pass the progressive resolution following the suit of the Herwad village, the Lok Sabha MP from Baramati said. “It is an earnest request that your department issues instructions in this regard to those concerned,” Sule told the state rural development minister. Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) NCP MP Supriya Sule has sought Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya's help for Indian students studying medicine in China, who have demanded that their return to the neighbouring country be facilitated to resume offline courses and arrangements for practical classes be made in India till then. In a letter to Mandaviya, Sule said the students are attending their lectures online in India and are anxious due to uncertainties surrounding reopening of the Chinese border and lifting of the travel restrictions. A large number of Indian students had come back to India when China shut all universities following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. China had restricted travel by suspending visa and residence permits from March 27, 2020 in view of the pandemic. “I met the delegation of Indian Students in China and the Foreign Medical Graduates Parents Association (FMGPA). They have put forth a few demands...requesting you to kindly look into the matter and help our students,” Sule said in the April 13 letter, a copy of which she shared on Twitter on Wednesday. In their letter to the Baramati MP, the students and the FMGPA said they are facing financial and mental stress due to uncertainties surrounding the reopening of the Chinese border and lifting of the travel restrictions. The students have demanded that arrangements be made for their return to China or practical classes be provided to them, in line with their curriculum, in India until they go back to China. “Please keep up with the perpetual efforts to facilitate the students' early return to their respective Chinese universities,” the students demanded in the letter to Sule. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had on March 25 raised with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi the issue of return of Indian students to China to resume their studies, and expressed hope that Beijing will adopt a non-discriminatory approach on it.

Mumbai, Apr 8 (PTI) A group of striking employees of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) staged a sudden and ferocious protest outside NCP chief Sharad Pawar's residence here on Friday afternoon, accusing the veteran leader of not doing anything to help them. While Pawar remained inside the house, his daughter and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule tried to reason with the protesters who numbered over a hundred, but in vain. The police, who seemed to have been taken by surprise initially, eventually took away most of the protesters from the spot, and registered a case against 107 persons. They also detained Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte, leader of the striking workers, for questioning with regard to the incident, an official said. Pawar, who was seen leaving his residence in a car later, said in a video message that the MSRTC workers have been misled by an unwise leadership. Leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi -- coalition of the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress -- condemned the incident, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray saying that those who instigated and carried out this attack would be punished. Protesters gathered outside 'Silver Oak', Pawar's residence on Pedder Road in south Mumbai, around 3 pm. Employees of the state transport body, which has over 90,000 persons on its payrolls, are on strike since November 2021. While Pawar's party is part of the ruling coalition, the transport portfolio is held by the Shiv Sena's Anil Parab. The main demand of the striking workers is that the cash-strapped transport corporation be merged with the state government. The protest came a day after the Bombay High Court asked the workers to resume duty by April 22. A group of MSRTC employees reached Pawar's residence and started shouting slogans against the former Union minister. Some protesters were also seen hurling footwear towards the house. Some 120 employees of MSRTC have died by suicide since the strike began. These are not suicides but murders, caused by the state's policy.... Sharad Pawar has not done anything to resolve the issue, a protester told reporters. This government did nothing for us. The Chanakya of this government, Sharad Pawar, is also responsible for our sufferings, said another worker. Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule tried to placate the protesters. I am ready to hold talks with you. Kindly cooperate...My father, mother and daughter are inside the house. I am ready to hold talks with you. Let me ensure their safety first and I will continue talking with the protesters, she said. Pawar himself said in a video message shared by the NCP that one need not be surprised by what happened, and if the leader is not wise, it has its effect on the workers. “We are with them (the workers). But not with the wrong leadership, he added. Chief Minister Thackeray condemned the incident, saying that such targeting of leaders and their families was unprecedented in Maharashtra. I have asked the home minister to take strict action against the instigators and perpetrators of the attack. No one should take law into their hands after this incident, he said. His government never ignored genuine demands of the striking workers, and even the Bombay High Court has asked them to return to work, the CM pointed out. Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil, who belongs to the NCP, said there will be a probe into the unknown forces behind the attack as well as the intelligence failure. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said the incident outside Pawar's residence was wrong by all means, and such agitations cannot be supported. I strongly condemn the incident,” the former chief minister said, while also adding that MSRTC workers have been protesting for over five months and their demands should be addressed in a proper way. Congress leader and revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat demanded strict action against those who instigated the protest. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the protest was orchestrated by those for whom the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government in Maharashtra is an eyesore. State Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited Pawar's residence after learning about the protests, sources said. In the evening, police registered an FIR against 107 persons for rioting and conspiracy at Gamdevi police station. There are 23 women among accused, a police official said. The police also asked MSRTC workers who had been staging a sit-in at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai since the strike began to vacate the area immediately.

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) Opposition members on Friday made a strong demand in Lok Sabha to rein in rising fuel prices and accused the government of putting the people to difficult times soon after the elections were over.Initiating the discussion on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha, Congress member Gaurav Gogoi said the government had kept the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas stable for a month and increased them thrice after the elections.Fuel prices have increased for the third time and jingoism is the only antidote this government is offering to the poor. Whether there is record unemployment, high inequality, or inflation, people are expected to put all their faith in the supreme leader, he said.Trinamool member Satabdi Roy said the poor of the country were not bothered about the Finance Bill but were keen to know when the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas would reduce.NCP leader Supriya Sule said the BJP rode to power on the slogan against inflation and it was time to remind the ruling party of its campaign against corruption.Even my mother used to tell me back then that prices of essential commodities were too high and it may affect the then government adversely. Members slam high oil prices during LS debate on Finance Bill

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Elections every month are the best way to check rising prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas, NCP member Supriya Sule said in Lok Sabha on Wednesday in a swipe at the Centre over the hike in fuel cost after the recent assembly polls. Raising the issue of hardships being faced by women due to the increase in the price of cooking gas, she said during the Zero Hour that the BJP won the assembly polls in four out of five states where people stood in queues to vote for it. But soon after the polls concluded, the prices went up, she said. Only elections can keep prices of fuel under control, Sule said and sarcastically requested the central government to hold polls every month. While polls will keep the ruling party busy, it will ensure prices of fuel items remain under control, she said. Hitting out at the government, she said it patted its own back when Ujjwala Yojna was launched to provide free gas cylinders to women. But now, the same women are facing problems due to sky-rocketing prices of cooking gas, the NCP leader said. Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also demanded that the government roll back prices of petrol, diesel and LPG. He claimed that in the name of the rise in international crude prices, the government has hiked excise duty to earn revenue. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, he also claimed that the UPA government had ensured that the common man is not hurt due to rise in prices of crude. Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for around 20 minutes as opposition members protested in the House against the rise in fuel prices. Petrol and diesel prices on Wednesday were hiked by 80 paise a litre each for the second day in a row. LPG price on Tuesday was hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder.

Presiding over a wedding here, Stalin said this marriage should be described as a 'Dravidian marriage' rather than calling it a 'Reformist wedding' (Seerthirutha Thirumanam). It is because the DMK government is being run on the 'Dravidian model,' he said. The essence of self-respect marriage is all about solemnising a wedding without a priest and by dispensing with all rituals. The Dravidian model is broadly, social justice driven, all-inclusive growth. He recalled that it was DMK founder and late Chief Minister C N Annadurai who amended the Hindu Marriage Act in 1967 in its application to Tamil Nadu to legalise self-respect marriages in the state. It was the first legislative initiative by Annadurai after the DMK formed government in Tamil Nadu, he said. The chief minister said everyone knew how that initiative became widely popular among the people. Late party patriarch M Karunanidhi had also underscored that legal sanctity should be bestowed across the nation on self-respect marriages. But people have told me some new facts about history. So, I will see to those facts in the future,” Koshyari said. The chief minister expressed concern about the safety of people from the state visiting Ukraine for business and education, and asked the Chief Secretary to be in touch with the Central government, said a statement from Thackeray's office.He also asked the officials to maintain contact with people from the state who are stranded in that country. Meanwhile, NCP MP Supriya Sule urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to make appropriate arrangements for safe passage of Indians stranded in Ukraine.“The current situation in #Ukraine is extremely worrisome. The NCP was not surprised by the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) action, the Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra said, adding it was unfortunate that the Centre was using its machinery against the BJP's political rivals in a “suppressive” manner. “It was expected, Nawab Bhai too had expected this. He had also tweeted in the past that he would keep tea and biscuits ready if the ED officials arrived at his home. Had they issued a notice (to Malik), they would have also got breakfast before leaving (Malik's residence). But they did not issue a notice,” Sule told a TV channel. Sule, who is the daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, claimed the ED's notice is issued only to opposition leaders. “Once you quit your own party and join them, then the notice disappears or goes into a shredder. We should know which shredder is this,” she said sarcastically without taking any name. Sule also claimed that “people in a certain party” know in advance if a leader is going to be raided or arrested. The ED on Wednesday questioned Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister and NCP's chief spokesperson Malik in a money laundering probe linked to the activities of the Mumbai underworld, fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his aides, officials said. The probe agency's move comes after registration of a new case and raids conducted by it on February 15 in Mumbai in connection with the operations of the underworld, linked to alleged illegal property deals and hawala transactions.

New Delhi, Feb 9 (PTI) Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said the projected fiscal deficit of 6.9 per cent for the current financial year is a responsible target as the government has tried to ensure a balance between keeping up expenditure and being fiscally prudent. Making an intervention during the discussion on the Union Budget 2022-23 in the Lok Sabha, the minister also said the Rs 1 lakh crore loan for states will help in speeding up infrastructure development and capital expenditure. In her Budget speech on February 1, Sitharaman had said the revised fiscal deficit in the current financial year is estimated at 6.9 per cent of GDP as against 6.8 per cent of GDP projected in the budget estimates. I don't want anyone to think this (fiscal deficit estimate) is unusual. The pandemic was unusual and therefore 6.9 per cent is a responsible fiscal deficit. That is the kind of fiscal deficit ... we have tried to do balancing between keeping up spending and being fiscally prudent, Sitharaman said. She was responding to certain remarks made by NCP leader Supriya Sule during the discussion. In the Budget speech, Sitharaman had also said the fiscal deficit in 2022-23 is estimated at 6.4 per cent of GDP, which is consistent with the broad path of fiscal consolidation announced by her last year to reach a fiscal deficit level below 4.5 per cent by 2025-26. While setting the fiscal deficit level in 2022-23, I am conscious of the need to nurture growth, through public investment, to become stronger and sustainable, she had said. Regarding giving Rs 1 lakh crore loan to states, Sitharaman on Wednesday said the amount is being given to states because we want to speed up infrastructure (development) and capital expenditure. The amount is over and above what the states have been given under their borrowing limits and so it is not going to affect their borrowing limits. When the states are being given the money it is more with the intention for several projects which they would want to complete. They can use this amount in total, the minister said. I thought it was the way in which we are supportive of the states, therefore we have given it. So, one it does not affect the FRBM, two, it does not give you (states) any interest burden, and three, you can use it for any project you want to do, she said. The Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act provides for ensuring fiscal discipline. In the Budget speech, Sitharaman had said that for 2022-23, an allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore will be given to states to assist them in catalysing overall investments in the economy. These fifty-year interest free loans are over and above the normal borrowings allowed to the states.

Pune, Feb 4 (PTI) An offence was registered against spiritual leader Bandya Tatya Karadkar for his alleged comments against NCP leader Supriya Sule and BJP's Pankaja Munde during an agitation in Maharashtra's Satara district, police said on Friday.Karadkar had on Thursday staged a protest against the state government's decision to permit sale of wine in supermarkets and grocery shops.During the agitation, the spiritual leader allegedly made some statements about Sule and Munde, an official from Satara police said.The police had initially registered a case against Karadkar and others for violating COVID-19 norms during the protest on Thursday, he said.However, another offence under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) was also registered against the spiritual leader for his remarks about the two politicians, the official said.On Thursday, we had booked Karadkar and others under section 144 of the CrPC and Disaster Management Act. After complaints from some women on Friday, another case was registered against him, he said.The offence is bailable, the official said, adding that as a part of the investigation, Karadkar will be called to give a statement.

New Delhi, Jan 2 (PTI) The parliamentary panel assigned to examine the landmark bill which seeks to raise the legal age of marriage for women to 21 has only one woman MP out of 31 members. The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, which will have wider influence over society especially females, was introduced in Lok Sabha during the winter session and referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports. The bill, piloted by the Women and Child Development Ministry, seeks to increase the legal age of marriage from 18 to 21. According to the members' list of the parliamentary standing committee, led by senior BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, available on the Rajya Sabha website, TMC MP Sushmita Dev is the only woman among the 31 members. When contacted, Dev said it would have been better if there were more women MPs in the panel. I wish there were more women MPs in the committee but having said that we will make sure all interest groups are heard, Dev told PTI. Echoing similar sentiments, NCP MP Supriya Sule, who has been raising women-centric issues in parliament, said there should have been more women MPs in the panel which will deliberate on issues related to women. However, she added that the chairman has the power to invite people before the panel. So for more inclusive and wider discussions, he can invite other women MPs. The Department-Related Standing Committees are permanent, while joint and select committees are constituted from time to time to deal with bills and relevant subjects of various ministries. These panels are constituted by both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports is a Rajya Sabha administered Committee. Committees constituted by Lok Sabha have more members from the lower house, while panels formed by Rajya Sabha have more representation from the Upper House. Parties nominate members based on their strength in the House. The proposed law will apply to all communities in the country and, once enacted, will supersede existing marriage and personal laws. The legal age of marriage for women is being raised by the Centre on the recommendations of the Jaya Jaitly Committee that was constituted by the WCD Ministry in June 2020. The introduction of the Bill was opposed by some members who contended that the move infringed upon several personal laws in violation of fundamental rights and demanded that it be referred to a parliamentary panel for greater scrutiny. The bill seeks to increase the legal age for women to marry to 21 years, as is the provision for men. It seeks to amend seven personal laws — the Indian Christian Marriage Act; the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act; the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act; the Special Marriage Act; the Hindu Marriage Act; and the Foreign Marriage Act.

New Delhi, Dec 15 (PTI) NCP leader Supriya Sule on Wednesday asked whether the Modi government had misled the Supreme Court by telling it that the raw census data collected in the 2011 Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) was inaccurate. Sule said the the Ministry of Home Affairs had told a parliamentary committee in 2016 that the SECC-2011 data was 98.87 per cent accurate. Her remarks came on a day the Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed by the Maharashtra government seeking directions to the Centre to disclose the SECC-2011 raw caste data of OBCs. Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Ministry of Home Affairs informed the Standing Committee that the data has been examined and 98.87 % data on individuals' caste and religion is error free,” she said. RGI has noted incidence of errors in respect of 1,34,77,030 individuals out of total SECC population of 118,64,03,770. States have been advised to take corrective measures,” Sule said. Thus now the question is whether the Union Govt has misled Supreme Court or Parliament? What is factual?” the NCP leader asked in a series of tweets. The Centre had told the apex court that the SECC 2011 is not an OBC data and it was not made public as it was found to be “flawed”, and “bound to mislead”. The government had said that it “fully supports” reservation for OBC but the exercise will have to be in line with the verdict of the Constitution bench which had mentioned triple conditions, including setting up a dedicated commission to conduct a contemporaneous rigorous empirical inquiry into the nature and implications of the backwardness qua local bodies within the state.

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram raised the issue of safety of animals and demanded that the government should constitute a task force to ensure that elephant deaths do not take place at railway tracks. The demand by the Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra came a day after the Supreme Court stayed till further orders the local body election in the state on seats where there is reservation of up to 27 per cent for the OBCs. The apex court made clear that the election process for the other seats would continue. “Hon. Supreme Court has put a stay on OBC Political Reservation. Given that the Winter Session of the Parliament is going on, we demand that the Union Government brings a legislation which must be debated during this session, in order to ensure the pending political reservation for OBC's along with reservation for Maratha & Dhangar Communities is addressed. This decision would impact a large section of the society pan India,” Sule tweeted. She urged the Centre to look into the matter for the betterment of millions of people. The top court on Monday passed the order while hearing two pleas, including the one assailing the provisions inserted/amended through an ordinance permitting reservation for the category of backward class of citizens up to 27 per cent uniformly throughout Maharashtra in the local bodies concerned.

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has said it received over Rs 26.26 crore in large contributions from corporates, electoral trusts and individuals in financial year 2020-21. In its statement submitted to the Election Commission on details of contributions in excess of Rs 20,000 during 2020-21, the party said it received Rs 26,26,09,999. Electoral trusts such as Harmony Electoral Trust and Prudent Electoral Trust contributed to the party fund. Individuals, including party leader Supriya Sule, and various corporates also contributed to the party. The Representation of the People Act stipulates that parties submit an annual report of contributions of over Rs 20,000 received from individual donors and entities. The NCP's report, submitted earlier this month, was put in public domain by the poll panel on Friday. Earlier this month, the Bahujan Samaj Party's contribution report had said that it received nil contributions in excess of Rs 20,000 during 2020-21. The BSP's statement was in line with its stated claim that it only gets funds from people with small earnings. The NCP and the BSP are recognised national parties.

The IT department had, on Thursday, raided some businesses linked to the kin of Pawar as well as a few real estate developers for alleged tax evasion. We do not indulge in the politics of revenge. We have been ruling for several years but have never considered out opponents as enemies. We have been nurtured by Yeshwantrao Chavan, she said here. Aurangabad, Sep 24 (PTI) NCP Member of Parliament Supriya Sule on Friday drew the central government's attention towards the poor condition of the road leading to the world famous Ajanta caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.After a visit to the world heritage site, a popular tourist attraction, Sule put out tweets urging Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to look into the issue.Sule wrote about the poor condition of the 100km-long Aurangabad-Ajanta caves road and underlined the need for good pathways for development of the area.The MP earlier this week visited the world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora caves, located in different direction, along with Daulatabad (Devgiri) fort, a national heritage monument in Aurangabad district. She travelled nearly 100km by road to reach Ajanta caves. Tourists from all over the world come to visit these caves and the road leading to them has heavy flow of vehicles, Sule said.I request Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari to think positively about this stretch and take a decision on it, the NCP leader said.Talking to PTI, Sule said, Out of 150km long Aurangabad-Ajanta-Jalgaon highway, four laning of 110km stretch has been completed and the remaining work is likely to be completed by the year-end .

Among those who took part in the online condolence meet were BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, NCP Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule, Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Shiv Sena leader and state minister Aaditya Thackeray. Fadnavis said Satav enjoyed friendly relations with all political leaders, while Thakur said he was a studious parliamentarian. Sule praised the departed leader's oratory skills, adding that his way of putting across a point was a lesson worth remembering. Thackeray said he was due to meet Satav but the turn of events after the latter recovered from the infection meant that day never came. Youth Congress chief BV Shriniwas said Satav taught him how to work and conduct oneself in a crisis.
