Several people, including two police officers, were injures after a large SUV drove through a parade in in the city of Gallup, New Mexico, on Thursday.
The New Mexico State Police said the vehicle drove through the annual Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial parade and the driver was taken into custody at the scene. Many pedestrians sustained injuries and were being treated at the scene. The extent of their injuries was not known.
“NMSP is investigating an incident involving multiple pedestrians at the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Centennial Celebration. Multiple people, including two Gallup PD officers, injured and are being treated on scene. The driver is in custody. More information when available,” New Mexico State Police said in a statement.

Witnesses told Fox News that there were at least two passengers in the vehicle when it drove through the parade.
Meanwhile, videos shared on social media by witnesses shows a group of people performing in the street. Suddenly, the crowd stats screaming and people start rushing to the the opposite direction of what appears to be a moving vehicle. Another video shows the damaged car on the sidewalk.

Navajo Nation Council Speaker Seth Damon issued a statement saying, “The Navajo Nation stands with resilience against any acts of violence and sends prayers of protection to those affected. This was a traumatic and triggering event for many, especially for our youth, elders, and our veterans who acted quickly.”
“Hold Gallup in your prayers tonight as we come together in faith and strength for one anther. May the Creator and Holy People bless you all tonight as we move forward together,” he said.

The parade was part of celebrations for the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial, which was founded in 1922 to honor Native American and Indigenous heritage.
