The Delhi Police have registered 22 cases so far in connection with violence during farmers’ tractor rally against farm laws on Tuesday that left one farmer dead and scores of cops injured. Cases were filed against unknown protestors, including the farmer who died after his tractor overturned, reports ANI.

The Delhi Police said that 86 policemen were injured in the violence, which took place mostly in central Delhi’s ITO and Red Forta areas, Mukarba Chowk, Gazipur, Seemapuri, Nangloi T-Point and Tikri Border.

The farmers’ protest that has been conducted peacefully for the past two months, turned violent on Republic Day as tractors, cranes and trucks rolled into the national capital, knocking down barricades at Ghazipur, Tikri and Singhu borders.

The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha had been given permission by Delhi Police to take out a peaceful tractor rally as per the proposed route. But, a group of farmers deviated from the set route and the rally soon plunged into chaos and violence.

The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said anti-social elements had “infiltrated the otherwise peaceful movement” and were responsible for deterioration in law and order situation.

The police said they will also register cases of violation of lawful directions, rioting, damage to public property and assault on public servants.
