New Delhi, Dec 19 (PTI) Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to Speaker Om Birla on Sunday asking him to put the contribution of former prime minister Indira Gandhi during the Bangladesh liberation war in the right historical perspective. His letter came after the opposition party took umbrage at the presiding officers and the government skipping mention of Indira Gandhi during Thursday's Vijay Diwas celebrations. Referring to Birla's statement in the House on December 16 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence, he reminded the Speaker that the Vijay Diwas was because of the bold and decisive decision of Indira Gandhi. She had courage and conviction and it was under her leadership that our country fought shoulder to shoulder along with Mukti Vahini, inflicted a crushing defeat on Pakistan, and helped liberate Bangladesh, he said. Chowdhury also recalled how former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, despite being in the opposition, praised Indira Gandhi and described her as an avatar of 'Mata Durga' post the Bangladesh War of Independence of 1971. India is an old civilisation but a young nation. A dominant section of the population is young and they deserve to know the truth regarding the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, he said. Chowdhury said he has received a volley of queries from people regarding the true facts about the liberation war as the Speaker in his message had mentioned about the courage and supreme sacrifice of our armed forces during the Bangladesh War of Independence. The truth is that we fought as a nation irrespective of caste, creed, religion or political affiliations. The triumph was not of any individual or group or political party. It was the victory of the nation. We, the People of India, emerged victorious. Therefore, the credit of the Bangladesh War of Independence must be attributed to each and every individual of the country without any omission of those who played a crucial role, the Congress leader said. Therefore, I shall urge you that in future with reference to any mention of the Bangladesh War of Independence of 1971, the great contribution of our Prime Minister late Smt. Indira Gandhi may always be put in the right historical perspective, Chowdhury told the Speaker. The Congress party had criticised the government for not mentioning Indira Gandhi on Vijay Diwas celebrations.

Agra, Dec 17 (PTI) Sixty-nine 1971 India-Pakistan War veterans from Bangladesh arrived in a special train here on Friday to commemorate ’Vijay Diwas’, a railways official said. A train 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh Special' brought the war veterans from Delhi to give them a taste of the country and the city, the official said. The war veterans were welcomed at the Agra Cantt Railway Station by Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), North Central Railway. Our aim is to make war veterans aware about culture of Agra and of India. We stand steadfast as a testimony to a strong cooperation and bonding between India and Bangladesh, ADRM Mudit Chandra said. According to the railways sources, the war veterans visited Agra Fort on Friday and will visit Taj Mahal on Saturday. This is the 50th year of the war against Pakistan which resulted in creation of Bangladesh.

Jammu, Dec 16 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Thursday that the government is determined to completely dismantle the terror ecosystem in the union territory and accused Pakistan of running of a factory of terrorism. At a function on the 50th Vijay Diwas, Sinha reminded Pakistan of its thrashing defeat and public surrender in 1971 and said India's armed forces will not back off from repeating it, if the need arises. Our neighbour is running a factory of terrorism. A country that has terrorism in its policy is a threat to humanity. Despite defeat in several wars, the country has not mended its ways. It is trying to destabilise this soil with proxy war but we won't let it succeed. We will give them a befitting reply, he said. The neighbouring country running the biggest terror factory in the world must remember the crushing defeats of 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999. If there is a need, I am confident that what happened in 1971, our army will not back off from repeating such an act, he said. India celebrated the 50th anniversary of its victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war on Thursday. On this day in 1971, our brave soldiers and officers had not only changed the geography, but took a giant leap in establishing our country as a global super power, Sinha said. He said India has been a supporter of peace since ancient times and has never adopted policy of expansionism despite being a super power. We have lived the values of peaceful coexistence, mutual harmony and believed in the philosophy of 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam'. But, we never lowered our guard and successfully conquered every challenge, he said. He also paid homage to the country's first Chief of Defense Staff, General Bipin Rawat, his wife and the armed forces personnel killed in a recent helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu.

Pune, Dec 16 (PTI) The 50th anniversary of 'Vijay Diwas', which commemorates India's victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, was on Thursday celebrated at the Army's Southern Command War Memorial here. The greatest victory ever over Pakistan saw the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation and India rose as a regional power to reckon with. With this decisive victory over the adversary, the Armed Forces of India once again affirmed themselves as a strong component of national power, an official release said. During the war, Southern Command valiantly defended the borders of the nation against any action by Pakistan. The notable battles, which were fought in the area of responsibility of the Southern Army included the famous battles of Longewala and Parbat Ali, where Pakistan's forces were destroyed by the gallant Indian troops, it said. The raid on Pakistani town of Chachro carried out by the soldiers of the renowned 10 Para Commando Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier) Bhawani Singh, was another famous military action deep inside enemy territory. These battles have gone down the pages of history as fine examples of grit, determination and bravery of our soldiers, the release added. To commemorate the occasion, a wreath-laying ceremony was conducted to pay homage to brave soldiers, airmen and sailors of the Indian Armed Forces. It was attended by military personnel of Pune Station. During the ceremony, tributes were paid to the gallant soldiers of Indo-Pak War 1971 at the Southern Command War Memorial Pune. A commemorative wreath was laid by Lieutenant General J S Nain, Army Commander, Southern Command on behalf of all ranks of Headquarters Southern Command.

Jaipur, Dec 16 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday announced government jobs to kin of 1971 Indo-Pak War martyrs from the state. He made the announcement while addressing a programme on Vijay Diwas at Amar Jawan Jyoti. As per the existing rules, any one dependent of those martyred between August 15, 1947 and December 31, 1970 is given a government job. The new rule will extend the cut off to December 31, 1971, paving the way for appointments of the dependents of soldiers martyred in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Gehlot said the new rule will be extended to include the son and daughter of the martyr's daughter (Navasa-Navasi), even if adopted, as dependents. The son and daughter of the martyr's brother and sister too will be reckoned as dependents, he said. Gehlot said he is proud of being the Chief Minister of a state where every house has the spirit of martyrdom to protect the borders of the country. On the occasion, he met and honoured the dependents of the officers and soldiers who were martyred in the 1971 War.

Bangladesh's inception was violent, with some origins in India's 1947 partition, when Pakistan was established as a distinct country. Ethnic Differences,Punjabis, Pashtuns, Sindhis, Baloch, and other minor ethnic groups dominated West Pakistan. In contrast, because East Pakistan was once part of the Indian region of Bengal, the population of what is now Bangladesh was largely ethnically Bengali. The problem of language was a thorny one from the start. West Pakistani leadership saw Bangla, which is spoken by the majority of East Pakistanis, as a non-Muslim language. Massive nonviolent demonstrations and strikes erupted in response to efforts to Islamize East Pakistanis through Urdu and purify Bengali culture from Hindu influences. Thousands of high school and college students demonstrated, defying Section 144 of the Criminal Procedural Code, which prohibits public meetings and assemblies of five or more individuals. Several people died as a result of the ensuing crackdown. It also fueled a growing demand for autonomy in East Pakistan from 1950 to 1969. In 1969, a major rebellion was violently suppressed by police, resulting in the introduction of martial law. A catastrophic hurricane named Bhola struck East Pakistan in 1970, killing 300,000 to 500,000 people. The government of West Pakistan's lackadaisical response inflamed tensions even more. Civil Disobedience,The same year, the sole majority political party in East Pakistan, led by Bengali politician Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, won a landslide victory in national elections, marking a significant turning point. Because it did not want an East Pakistani political party to dominate the federal government, the Pakistani leadership was hesitant to accept the results. As a result, a civil disobedience campaign erupted in East Pakistan. The Pakistani government launched Operation Searchlight, a military operation, in response to the growing demand for Bengali autonomy. It killed at least 7,000 Bengali civilians – including Hindus and Muslims – in a single night, according to journalist Robert Payne. Pakistani forces are thought to have killed between 300,000 and 500,000 civilians, whereas the Bangladesh government claims three million. Indian Intervention,Indira Gandhi, the then Indian prime minister, opted to support the former East Pakistan. She made the decision to take in individuals fleeing East Pakistan. 8-10 million individuals are thought to have fled the country. On December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched air raids on 11 Indian airbases, beginning the war. Perhaps for the first time, India's three armies battled in harmony. General Sam Manekshaw, the Army Chief of Staff, was ordered by Gandhi to unleash a full-scale war against the neighbour. The fight claimed the lives of almost 3,800 Indian and Pakistani soldiers. Dharamshala (HP), Dec 16 (PTI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday expressed his gratitude towards soldiers and ex-servicemen on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. Bhagwat is on a five-day visit to the state during which he will teach and guide volunteers at the Sangh office in Kangra from December 17. He is also scheduled to meet and address ex-servicemen on December 18 in Dharamshala. Vijay Diwas is celebrated on December 16 every year to commemorate the victory of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the 1971 war. Wreaths were laid by war veterans, next of kin of those who fought for the country, Army commanders of the three services and Lt General Manoj Pande, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command. As buglers sounded the 'Last Post' and 'Rouse' from the rampart behind the magnificent edifice of the memorial at Fort William, the headquarters of the Army's Eastern Command, participants observed two minutes' silence to pay homage to all those who died in the fight. Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshall (retd) Arup Raha, Lt General (retd) J R Mukerji and Lt General (retd) Praveen Bakshi were among the retired officers who paid floral tributes at the Vijay Smarak. Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra was also present at the event. The Army, which had lined up several functions during the week to commemorate the golden jubilee of the 1971 victory, has cancelled many of those following the demise of Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 12 other officers in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu earlier this month.

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Thursday amid a protest by opposition parties which wanted a discussion on the Special Investigation Team's report regarding the October 3 Lakhimpur Kheri violence in Uttar Pradesh. Soon after the listed documents were tabled, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said he has not admitted notices for suspension of scheduled business. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge rose to speak, but the chairman did not allow him. This led to a protest by Congress party members and others. The Congress had given notice on the Lakhimpur Kheri issue under the Rajya Sabha rule 267, that calls for setting aside the business of the day to take up the issue listed in the notice. The chairman adjourned the proceedings till 2 pm. Among other reports and papers, the report of the Joint Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 was also tabled in the House.This report shows… the chairman is cooperative, the government is accomodative, the opposition is responsive, said Congress leader Jairam Ramesh while tabling the report on data protection. New Delhi, Dec 10 (PTI) The Union government on Friday said that no farmer died due to police action during the year-long protests by farmers. Various farmer groups were protesting against three new farm laws, which have now been scrapped. The year-long protest at the Delhi borders was suspended by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Thursday after the Union government accepted their key pending demands, including withdrawal of police cases against the protesters and on Minimum Support Price (MSP). In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday said, the subject of compensation, etc. to the families of the deceased farmers in the farmers movement is with the concerned state governments. No farmer died as a result of police action during the farmers' agitation, he said. Tomar was responding to a joint question by Congress leader Dhiraj Prasad Sahu and AAP leader Sanjay Singh. The members had asked whether the government is planning to provide or made any provision towards livelihood monetary compensation to the families of the farmers who died during farmers' protests. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been raising the issue of deaths of farmers during the year-long protests. The SKM, which suspended the protests after receiving a formal letter from the Union government accepting their key pending demands, on Thursday also said that farmers would celebrate December 11 as 'Vijay Diwas' and take out victory marches following which they will head home. The SKM is an umbrella body of 40 farm unions. Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh, were protesting at various Delhi borders from late November 2020, seeking repeal of the three farm laws. On November 29, Parliament passed a Bill to repeal the three laws. Replying to separate queries on the MSP, Tomar said, a formal formation of a committee to promote zero budgeting based agriculture, to change crop pattern as per the changing needs of the country and to make MSP more effective and transparent is under consideration. Asked if the government proposes to bring a law to give legal guarantee to MSP for every crop as recommended by Swaminathan Commission, the minister said the government has already implemented in 2018-19 the recommendation made by the National Commission on Farmers (NCF) to fix MSP at at least 50 per cent profit on weighted average cost of production. The Centre fixes MSP for 22 mandated agricultural crops and Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The MSP for toria and de-husked coconut are also announced based on the MSP of rapeseed and mustard and copra, respectively.

Farm union leaders also said they are preparing to accord a warm welcome and honour to farmers as they return to their homes after their year-long agitation at Delhi borders against the Centre's three agriculture laws.Farm union leader Sikkim Devi said they have decided to end the boycott of BJP-JJP leaders in the state.We have no problem now and BJP-JJP leaders can now hold their programmes and events as earlier, she told PTI over the phone.The farmer leaders had announced a boycott” of BJP-JJP leaders over the issue of three farm laws and many leaders of the ruling combine faced protests by farmers at different places in the state during various events over the past one year.The farm union leaders had also earlier said they will not allow the entry of Deputy Chief Minister and JJP leader Dushyant Chautala to any of the villages of his Uchana assembly constituency in Jind district for any public function as part of their agitation.Devi also said that farmers will receive a grand welcome enroute to their villages and later they will abe honoured at their respective villages also after returning from the protest sites.Farm union leader Azad Palwa also said in a statement that farmers returning from various protest sites at Delhi's borders will receive a rousing welcome.He said this agitation of farmers will be remembered for centuries.Devi also lauded the role played by women in the agitation and said they stood shoulder-to-shoulder with their male counterparts.'Langars' will be arranged at different places when farmers head to their villages, she said. He said one bike rally was flagged off by General Officer Commanding 'Fire and Fury Corps' Lt Gen PGK Menon on July 19 from Leh in which 15 riders traversed a total distance of 1,000 kilometres through harsh and the rugged terrain of Ladakh and finally reached Drass on Friday.The rally was led by Lt Gen Menon himself, he said.The public relations officer (PRO) Defence said in the same spirit, another bike rally titled 'Dhruva Kargil Ride' was organised under the aegis of the Northern Command of Army. Forty bikers drove across the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh from Udhampur to Drass and the rally was led by Lt Gen Joshi, from Udhampur till Drass traversing a total distance of 350 kilometres, Col Musavi said.He said Lt Gen Joshi is himself a war hero and Gallantry Awardee of Operation Vijay -- the Kargil War.Senior military generals, including General Officer Commanding of White Knight Corps, Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar and General Officer Commanding of Chinar Corps, Lt Gen DP Pandey, also participated as riders in the rallies, he said. Both the bike rallies were flagged in at Kargil War Memorial, Drass. The bike rallies were held as a tribute to the brave hearts of the Kargil War who gave their today for our tomorrow, the PRO defence said.

Srinagar, Jul 18 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday paid tribute to the martyrs ahead of the Kargil Vijay Diwas. “I bow to all the heroes, their valour and supreme sacrifice in the defense of the motherland and also salute the undaunted courage of their families. Today, the tricolour is waving with pride and J&K is entering a new era of progress all due to the gallantry of our soldiers,” he said during the 4th episode of “Awaam ki Awaaz”. In his radio programme, the emphasis was laid on the enterprising youth of J&K and the overall developmental agenda of the government around creating opportunities for them like establishment of youth clubs in all the Panchayats across the UT in the coming weeks. In the first phase, 25,000 young boys and girls will participate in different cultural, sports, skill development, and community programmes. J-K Sports Council organises at least four to five sports events every day in different disciplines and “the immense youth engagement clearly narrates their success stories”, the LG said. These steps have been highly appreciated on social media and will bring a new revolution in the field of youth engagement and employment, he added. According to the LG, J&K is going to hold 17 national competitions in various sports in which about 12,000 players from all states and UTs will participate. He further said that the administration has decided to provide financial assistance to 400 dental surgeons to start their own clinics under “Mission Youth”. As many as 800 paramedics will also become part of this programme later, he said. He also said that a 360-degree training in financial services for youth in association with Bombay Stock Exchange aims to train 5,000 youths. Welcoming the suggestions on reforms in the education sector, the LG said all the suggestions were “very interesting” and would have far-reaching impact. He assured that the administration was “fully committed” to making progressive changes in the field of education to make it more skill-oriented. The concerned departments would take necessary action on all these suggestions, he added. On the issue of seasonal teachers highlighted by one Javed Iqbal from Poonch, the LG said that the administration was concerned about their well-being and had also hiked their emoluments. “Our education department is preparing a comprehensive plan to increase the learning outcome of children for the remaining six months and I assure you that a decision will be taken on it soon,” Sinha said. The LG said after reading the suggestions received from the youngsters, he was hopeful that the fresh whiff of energy and resolve of our youth will transform the socio-economic structure of the UT. “With the courage and foresight of younger generation, we will take J&K on a new trajectory of progress,” he added. Expressing joy over the achievement of School Education Department, the LG informed that 80,600 primary teachers in J&K were enriched under “Nishtha”, an online training programme. He said it had been decided to constitute Educational Reform Committee of teachers at various levels. On the suggestions around establishing a horticulture centre in every block, new mandis and increasing the capacity of cold storage, Sinha said the administration was providing subsidy for establishing a cold storage. He said the present cold storage capacity of 1.6 lakh metric tonnes would be increased to five lakh metric tonnes in the next two years. Keeping in mind the pandemic, the administration has decided that the tourists coming to each entry point are strictly screened and allowed to go to the destination only after the report comes negative, he said, urging everyone to take precautions against the coronavirus. “I request you all to please be careful. Covid appropriate behavior is the most infallible weapon to fight this epidemic. By following the Corona protocol, you are not only saving your life but also protecting the lives of people around,” he said. The LG extended Eid-ul-Azha greetings to the people and appealed to them to celebrate the festival by following the Covid protocol.
