Voting has begun for the crucial US Senate seats in Georgia, on Tuesday, Associated Press reported. The results of Georgia’s two Senate seats will determine which party will control the US Congress.

Polling for the seats was held along with the US presidential election on November 3, but runoff elections are being held as no candidate could win 50% of the votes needed to win, as per Georgia’s state law.

For one seat, Republican David Purdue is contesting against Democratic Jon Ossoff. Purdue is a former businessman, while Ossoff is a documentary filmmaker.

For the other seat, Republican Kelly Leoffler is contesting against Democratic Raphael Warnock. While Leoffler is a businesswoman, who was appointed to the Senate by Georgia’s governor in January last year, Warnock is an African American pastor, who preaches at the same church where Martin Luther King Jr used to preach.

The runoffs are crucial as they’ll determine who’ll control the Congress. If the Democrats win both the seats, they’ll control the Senate. This is because there will be a 50-50 split and the deciding vote will be cast by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who is a Democrat.

The party already controls the House of Representatives and by winning the Senate, President-elect Joe Biden will find it easy to advance his policies.

If the Republicans win the race, they’ll control the Senate.

Biden, Harris and President Donald Trump have held rallies in Georgia for their party’s candidates.
