Kolkata
tram cars, on Friday, introduced free WiFi facility to make the transportation
mode more attractive and work-friendly for the young passengers, said an
official of West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) according to a PTI report.

“The
idea of WiFi in trams is to make it attractive for the youth and the
tech-savvy,” WBTC Managing Director, Rajanvir Singh Kapur said.

However, the free WiFi service has been introduced only in air- conditioned coaches so far and will be extended to all coaches within a month, depending upon the commuters demand.

The Young Readers’ Tramcar and the Tram Library would also have this facility.

WBTC cited abating ridership of young people in tram cars as the reason to launch the free internet service and assured that the best amenities would be provided to the commuters in the future as well.

“The
WBTC has been taking all plausible steps to make trams a choice mode,” its
chairman Rachpal Singh said.
