The World Trade Center in New York City disappeared behind the clouds of smoke that came from the Canadian wildfires. Photos and videos of the building went viral on social media.

New York City has been clogged with smoke and fumes coming from the Canadian wildfires. The city was ranked number one for the world’s worst air quality on Wednesday afternoon with its Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring past 350 – which is ‘hazardous’.

Broadway shows, airline flights and sports events were canceled. The New York Yankees vs Chicago White Sox game on Wednesday was postponed.

Meanwhile, visuals of the George Washington Bridge, which connects Manhattan and New Jersey, and the World Trade Center covered behind clouds of smoke surfaced on social media.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, in a press conference, called the wildfire “a health and environmental crisis”. She urged residents to stay careful.

Hochul said that normally the Air Quality Index is around 50 and that Brooklyn measured 413 and Queens 407 on Wednesday.

“Simply stay indoors. Outdoors is dangerous in just about every part of our state. Not just vulnerable communities, but literally everyone,” she said.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders warned that the Canadian wildfire smoke is a sign of climate crisis catastrophe to come.

“It bears repeating how unprepared we are for the climate crisis,” AOC wrote on Twitter.

“We must adapt our food systems, energy grids, infrastructure, healthcare, etc ASAP to prepare for what’s to come and catch up to what is already here.”

“Right now, 98 MILLION people on the East Coast are under air quality alerts from Canadian fires and, last night, NYC had the worst air quality in the world,” Bernie Sanders wrote on Twitter.
