Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 41, has announced his decision to hang up his boots after he made one last appearance at the San Siro.

Ibrahimovic has spent the majority of the season injured, but made a trip to the San Siro to watch AC Milan’s final Serie A game on Sunday. However, after the game, the big Swede made his way onto the pitch to address the crowd.

Despite his assertion that he would keep playing next season, this proves to be the end of his career. The ex-Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain star has made just four appearances this season, last featuring against Udinese on March 18.

And as he broke down in tears, Ibrahimovic told the crowd: “The time has arrived to say goodbye”. The San Siro, who had already paid tribute to Ibrahimovic earlier in the evening with a tifo, all applauded the legend as he walked away from the pitch one last time.

Tribute to Zlatan’s legendary career started pouring in on social media. One fan wrote, “A reminder that Zlatan turned down a €100 million per year offer from China to rebuild Milan and bring them back to the top. You will forever be remembered as a legend”

Another fan wrote, “When even the King Ibrahimovic gets emotional himself, I just can’t help myself. Grazie & Goodbye Zlatan“

Another Twitter user said, “There’s footballing cult-heroes, legends and icons. Then there’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic. We won’t ever see anything like you again”

Ibrahimovic, who made his debut at Swedish powerhouses Malmo, has been one of the sport’s most prominent talents for the past 20 years. But it was at Ajax where he made his debut on the European scene with a frantic dash right into the middle of NAC Breda’s defense.

Ibrahimovic first went to Juventus and then Inter Milan before being contacted by Pep Guardiola and Barcelona. He struggled in Catalonia though, criticizing Guardiola for not treating him like the Ferrari he had just purchased.
