Cloudbursts triggered flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir's Amarnath shrine on Friday, claiming at least five lives, officials said. ,What are cloudbursts? ,A cloudburst is a sudden aggressive rainstorm falling for a short period of time limited to a small geographical area. If 10 centimetres of rainfall is received at a station within one hour, the rain event is called a ‘cloudburst’. This sudden discharge of a large amount of water often causes loss of human lives and property. ,How do cloudbursts occur? ,When warm monsoon winds interact with cold winds it leads to formation of huge clouds, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director Mrutunjay Mohapatra. Such clouds are called cumulonimbus and can stretch to 13–14 kilometres in height. If they get trapped over a region or if there is no air movement for them to disperse, they discharge over a specific area. ,Where do cloudbursts occur?,Cloudbursts usually occur in high-altitude areas due to formation of a low-pressure area on the top of a mountain. The low-pressure zone attracts clouds to the top of the mountain with immense force. When they hit the peak, the moisture is released in the form of rain. ,In case of some cloudbursts, almost 13 centimetres of rain can fall in an hour, often in the form of extremely large droplets. ,IMD Director Mohapatra says a cloudburst is a very small-scale event and mostly occurs over hilly areas in the Himalayas or the Western Ghats. ,Why are cloudbursts difficult to predict?,According to IMD’s official website, cloudbursts are very difficult to predict due to their small scale in space and time. Monitoring or nowcasting (that is, forecasting few hours ahead of time) requires a dense radar network over cloudburst-prone areas a very high-resolution weather forecasting model to resolve the scale of a cloudburst.

On June 21, 2022, web users on high traffic sites like Amazon Web Services, Shopify, Discord and Canva amongst a host of others noticed something was up. Allegedly, over the past year and a half, the reverse proxy host platform has been upscaling their architecture in an effort to make it more flexible and resilient. A reverse proxy is the face of a back-end application and will pass on information requests made by users to that application. ,Also Read: Tech companies form metaverse standards body, Apple left out,The outage didn’t last for too long, just over an hour. Downdetector found that Cloudflare’s systems went down at nearly 12 PM Indian Time. The first data centre came back up around 12:30 PM and by 1:10 PM, Cloudflare reported that things were back to normal. ,Traffic at 19 of their data centres were affected according to the platform. Unfortunately for them, those centres were also hubs of global Internet traffic and handled a significant chunk of information flow. Surprisingly, the centres only comprise 4% of their total network but their downtime affected 50% of requests, according to Cloudflare. ,Also Read: Microsoft to stop selling AI facial recognition software,A change in their long-running project to increase the resilience of their network infrastructure was what triggered the outage, according to a statement released by the company. As part of the project, the company has already converted some of its other centres to their proprietary architecture internally called Multi-Collo PoP. ,Much like this one, the Internet faced a global outage last year when another hosting platform, Fastly went down because a customer changed their settings which triggered a bug in their software. Outages like this have often raised questions about the small amount of infrastructure companies and their reliability when it comes to hosting the Internet.

The bright meteors flying through the sky are upon us again as the Perseid Meteor Shower will fill the night sky with streaks of light and color as it began July 14 and will last through August 24.  It is known as the “best meteor shower of the year” by NASA because of its fast bright and plentiful meteors that can be easily viewed outside during the warm summer months. . The Perseid meteors come from the comet known as 109/Swift-Tuttle that brings this yearly meteor shower each summer. The meteors will peak around August 12, where up to 100 meteors an hour can be caught shooting across the sky at 37 miles per second, leaving long streaks in the sky. . The meteor shower is named after the constellation Perseus, which is the area in the sky the meteors appear to come from while looking from the Northern Hemisphere. The Perseid shower happens when Earth makes its way through the trail of cosmic debris left behind by 109PSwift-Tuttle, a comet that won't return to the inner solar system until 2125. Perseids meteors are known for their fireballs and one might expect to see a larger, brighter explosion of light and color in the sky that will appear for longer than a typical meteor streak. For the best viewing of the meteor shower, get away from buildings and city lights. NASA says to stay up late the night of August 11 to watch the meteor and the alternative trick is waking up extra early on August 12 as the shower’s peak occurs in the pre-dawn hours. .
