Indian Army's Assault Dog, Axel, laid down its life during an operation carried out by the Indian Army against militants in the Baramulla district of Kashmir. Axel, Army Dog No 74B7, was honoured by the Indian Army for its ultimate sacrifice in a wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday. ,Axel was a member of the Army's 26 Army Dog Unit. The Indian Army routinely uses dogs to sniff out explosive devices, and clear locations before launching attacks. Some are used for infantry patrolling, as guard dogs, and also on rescue missions. Balaji, another Indian Army dog, was sent in beforehand into the first room of the building they had suspected the militants were hiding in. After Balaji cleared the room, Axel was sent in as well. It was the second room where death awaited the brave canine. Although the first room was empty, there was a militant hiding in the second room who shot Axel. Dog breeds the Army mainly uses in its operations include the Indian Mudhol hounds, alongside Labradors and German Shepherds.

Jagroop Singh Rupa and Mannu Kussa, two gangsters accused of being involved in the murder of Punjabi rap singer Sidhu Moose Wala, were killed in an encounter with the police Wednesday. Media reports indicate that Jagroop Singh Rupa and Mannu Kussa were killed at Bhakna village located 20 kilometres from Amritsar. Police were tailing the two men and were able to corner them at the village when the shootout ensued. The encounter was confirmed by Punjab’s Anti-Gangster Task Force. Jagroop Singh Rupa and Manprit Singh alias Mannu Kussa were members of the Jaggu Bhaganpuria gang, according to The Tribune. Bhaganpuria had sent these shooters to Lawerence Bishnoi to kill Moose Wala, the report further said. Police had been trying to track them down for the last 52 days. ,Three law enforcement officials were injured in the encounter. ,The encounter started around noon. At least eight shooters involved in Sidhu Moose Wala's killing have been arrested. ,Sidhu Moose Wala, whose formal name was Shubhdeep Singh Sindhu, was shot dead near his village Moosa on May 29. Moose Wala was an extremely popular Punjabi rap artist who contested the recent Punjab Assembly elections on behalf of the Congress. ,Police sources say Mannu Kussa, one of the gangsters shot on Wednesday, had fired the first shots at Moose Wala. ,Police from three states -- Punjab, Delhi and Mumbai -- are investigating Sidhu Moose Wala's murder. Media reports say Moose Wala's murder was allegedly orchestrated by Satinder Singh alias Gody Brar, who is based out of Canada. Brar coordinated with Lawrence Bishnoi, a gangster incarcerated at New Delhi's Tihar jail. ,Sidhu Moose Wala's murder led to severe criticism of the newly-elected Punjab government. The Aam Aadmi Party government led by Bhagwant Mann had altered the security detail of Sidhu Moose Wala the day before he was shot dead. AAP's move was an apparent attempt to cut down on VIP culture.

Shopian 'fake' encounter: Army officer among three named in J&K Police charge sheet

Judicial commissions specially constituted to probe high profile cases usually go on endlessly. So the three-member high level judicial commission inquiring into the shoddily carried out police encounter of Kanpur gangster Vikas Dubey is no exception. Constituted by the Supreme Court precisely four months ago on July 22, the commission of Inquiry headed by former SC judge BS Chauhan was assigned a two-month time frame to complete its findings. As such, it was expected to accomplish the task by the end of September. . However, fact remains that even at the end of November the commission was far from halfway of completing its task. According to Justice Chauhan, the commission had already sought extension of time.  “We started the inquiry once the commission’s office was set up in Lucknow sometime in August. Thereafter we visited different places, including Vikas Dubey’s village where he had gunned down eight policemen, as well as the place where he was killed in the encounter while being brought from Ujjain, where he had surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh police”, he told this scribe over telephone from Noida, where he resides.  . He said, “Currently, evidence of policemen and government officials was being recorded, and once that is done, we will invite other parties to record their evidence, following which lawyers of the two sides will put across their respective arguments.”. Attributing part of the delay to his own “brief illness”, he said, “the report will be prepared only after this whole exercise is accomplished.” While explaining how delays in judicial inquiries were unavoidable on account of the long laid-down procedures under the Commission of Inquiries Act, he candidly admitted, “I cannot tell you how much more time the entire exercise could take.”. It may be pertinent to mention that initially the delay was caused due to certain controversies that arose over the credentials of the three members of the commission. Besides, media reports raising serious questions, a Mumbai-based advocate Ghanshyam Upadhaya also moved a petition before the apex court against the appointment of Justice Chauhan as head of the commission. Upadhaya’s argument was about Justice Chauhan’s nexus with the ruling BJP. He sought to argue on the grounds that Justice Chauhan’s younger brother Virendra Singh was a BJP MLC while his daughter was married to a BJP MP’s son. However, the petition was not only dismissed, but the Supreme Court also flayed the petitioner for raising issues against the appointment of Justice Chauhan as head of the panel. "There are judges whose father or brother or relatives are MPs. Are you (petitioner) saying that they all are biased judges? If any relative is belonging to a political party, is this an illegal act?” the apex court told Upadhaya.  . Earlier, the top court had dismissed a separate application seeking removal of two other members of the inquiry commission, saying that it would not allow the petitioner to cast aspersions on anyone. The other two members of the judicial commission were former UP director general of police KL Gupta and retired Allahabad High Court judge S.K.Agarwal. Interestingly, the names of each of the members were proposed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in consultation with the UP government, which was clearly the interested party. . Gupta’s strong BJP nexus was an open secret and he headed the UP police during the Kalyan Singh regime. Besides his close relative Mohit Agarwal was Inspector General of Police of Kanpur zone and his role in the encounters was bound to come under question. Doubts were, therefore, raised about his impartiality. . Justice Agarwal had resigned after he was transferred from Allahabad to Jharkhand High Court in view of certain serious complaints against him. He was practicing lawyer in the Uttarakhand High Court when he was handpicked for the judicial panel. . Interestingly, a Special Investigating Team (SIT) set up earlier by the UP government to go into the same case, has already submitted its report, indicting more than two dozen cops for their close connections with the gangster. However, it was unlikely that the report of the judicial commission would see the light of the day anytime in the near future. So the three-member high level judicial commission inquiring into the shoddily carried out police encounter of Kanpur gangster Vikas Dubey is no exception.Constituted by the Supreme Court precisely four months ago on July 22, the commission of Inquiry headed by former SC judge BS Chauhan was assigned a two-month time frame to complete its findings.&nbsp;As such, it was expected to accomplish the task by the end of September.&nbsp;However, fact remains that even at the end of November the commission was far from halfway of completing its task.According to Justice Chauhan, the commission had already sought extension of time.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We started the inquiry once the commission’s office was set up in Lucknow sometime in August. Thereafter we visited different places, including Vikas Dubey’s village where he had gunned down eight policemen, as well as the place where he was killed in the encounter while being brought from Ujjain, where he had surrendered before the Madhya Pradesh police”, he told this scribe over telephone from Noida, where he resides.&nbsp;&nbsp;He said, “Currently, evidence of policemen and government officials was being recorded, and once that is done, we will invite other parties to record their evidence, following which lawyers of the two sides will put across their respective arguments.”Attributing part of the delay to his own “brief illness”, he said, “the report will be prepared only after this whole exercise is accomplished.” While explaining how delays in judicial inquiries were unavoidable on account of the long laid-down procedures under the Commission of Inquiries Act, he candidly admitted, “I cannot tell you how much more time the entire exercise could take.”It may be pertinent to mention that initially the delay was caused due to certain controversies that arose over the credentials of the three members of the commission. Besides, media reports raising serious questions, a Mumbai-based advocate Ghanshyam Upadhaya also moved a petition before the apex court against the appointment of Justice Chauhan as head of the commission. Upadhaya’s argument was about&nbsp;Justice Chauhan’s nexus with the ruling BJP. He sought to argue on the grounds that Justice Chauhan’s younger brother Virendra Singh was a BJP MLC while his daughter was married to a BJP MP’s son.However, the petition was not only dismissed, but the Supreme Court also flayed the petitioner for raising issues against the appointment of Justice Chauhan as head of the panel.&nbsp;\\\"There are judges whose father or brother or relatives are MPs. Are you (petitioner) saying that they all are biased judges? If any relative is belonging to a political party, is this an illegal act?” the apex court&nbsp;told Upadhaya.&nbsp; &nbsp;Earlier, the top court had dismissed a separate application seeking removal of two other members of the inquiry commission, saying that it would not allow the petitioner to cast aspersions on anyone.The other two members of the judicial commission were former UP director general of police KL Gupta and retired Allahabad High Court judge S.K.Agarwal. Interestingly, the names of each of the members were proposed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in consultation with the UP government, which was clearly the interested party.&nbsp;Gupta’s strong BJP nexus was an open secret and he headed the UP police during the Kalyan Singh regime. Besides his close relative Mohit Agarwal was Inspector General of Police of Kanpur zone&nbsp;and his role in the encounters was bound to come under question. Doubts were, therefore, raised about his impartiality.&nbsp;Justice Agarwal had resigned after he was transferred from Allahabad to Jharkhand High Court in view of certain serious complaints against him. He was practicing lawyer in the Uttarakhand High Court when he was handpicked for the judicial panel.&nbsp;Interestingly, a Special Investigating Team (SIT) set up earlier by the UP government to go into the same case, has already submitted its report, indicting more than two dozen cops for their close connections with the gangster.However, it was unlikely that the report of the judicial commission would see the light of the day anytime in the near future. A local militant, who surrendered before the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, expressed gratitude to the officials for giving him another chance and appealed to all ultras to shun the path of militancy, citing it as a “deception”, reported news agency PTI.&nbsp;The surrendered militant was identified as Khawar Sultan Mir, a resident of the Drangbal area of Pampore in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.,“I am thankful to J-K Police and forces, Army, who gave me another chance to live my life. They told me to come out, took me out alive and treated me well. They did not torture me and treated me like their brother. 'Deception': Militant who surrendered in J&K's Pulwama urges others to give up arms

An Assam Rifles personnel was killed on Sunday following an ambush by insurgents in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district, a senior police officer said. ,Another soldier was injured in the ambush with the militants, who are suspected to be part of proscribed outfits ULFA (I) and NSCN (K), the official said. ,The soldier who died has been identified as Havildar Birendra Singh Yadav, said Mihin Gambo, district Superintendent of Police.,"The ambush took place near Tengmo village in Jairampur sub-division around 9 am when the Assam Rifles personnel were returning to their camp in a water tanker after fetching water," the SP said. He added that the exchange of fire lasted for around 30 minutes. ,The injured jawan has been admitted to a hospital, Gambo said, adding casualties on the militants' side is not immediately known.,A massive combined search operation by the Assam Rifles, the state police and the CRPF is underway, the SP added.
