Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey was an Indian Army soldier who laid down his life in the service of his nation during the 1999 India-Pakistan Kargil War. A recipient of India’s highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra, Lieutenant Pandey was only 24-years-old when he breathed his last. Undeterred by the danger, Lieutenant Pandey led his team with a fiery battle cry. He single-handedly destroyed both the first and second battle positions by killing four enemy soldiers despite suffering bullet injuries to his shoulder and leg. Lieutenant Pandey also managed to destroy the fourth enemy position with a grenade, but then himself succumbed to fatalities. His Param Vir Chakra citation is reflective of the bravery he put on display that day, “Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, thus showed most conspicuous bravery, indomitable courage, exemplary personal valour, outstanding leadership and devotion to duty of an exceptionally high order, in the face of the enemy and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Army”. As part of the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations, Pangode Military Station in Trivandrum hosted an installation of an underwater portrait of late Captain Vikram Batra, Param Vir Chakra, by artist 'Da Vinci' Suresh on Tuesday. The event was organised by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Bond Water Sports Pvt Ltd scuba team to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas, according to a defence statement. During the event, the URF authorities presented the World Record certificate. The Station Commander of Pangode Military Station, who was the chief guest of the event, presented a memento to the artist and team of Bond Water Sports Pvt Ltd, according to the release, which also noted that a military band display was organised as part of the event. The artist used tiles to create the unique 1,500 sq ft underwater installation, which took eight hours to complete. Lieutenant Balwan Singh Panghal was born on 17 October,1973 in Sasrauli, Rohtak district in Haryana. He was inspired to join the army by his father, Shobha Chand, who was a decorated veteran of the 2nd Jat Battalion. He joined the OTA, Chennai in March, 1999 and received a short-service commission in the 18 Grenadiers, with the service number SS-37691. On 27 May 1999, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Vijay to push back the Pakistani Army from Indian soil. The critical aim of the operation was to capture Tiger Hill, (also called Point 5062), a peak at a height of 16,500 feet in the Drass-Kargil area of Ladakh. The task to capture the target was given to Lt. Balwan Singh. Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, who held the post of Rifleman during the 1999 India-Pakistan War at Kargil, is a well-decorated official of the Indian Army. He is a receipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honor, for the bravery he put on display during Operation Vijay of the Kargil War as part of the 13th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles. July 26 is commemorated as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ every year in order to pay homage to the sacrifices made by the heroes of the Indian Army to attain victory over Pakistan and recapture all Indian territories in the Dras sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district. Tuesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the end of the Kargil War. In the war, the Indian Army launched ‘Operation Vijay’ to recapture strategic posts that had been occupied by Pakistani forces, who trespassed across the Line of Control dressed as Kashmiri insurgents. The war was fought for 84 days from May 3 to July 26, with hundreds of soldiers dying on both sides. He noticed that there were no footprints in the snow leading to spot where they were, making it obvious that they had come from the other side. He informed the Indian Army of the same, who soon learned of the Pakistani plot to capture strategic locations along the mountain ridges. ,The intruders did not wear uniforms and instead were clad in Pathani outfit, with Pakistan later denying their involvement, claiming Kashmiri insurgents were responsible for the conflict. However, documents retrieved from the intruders proved they were Pakistan military personnel. How was the war fought?,There were three main phases of the Kargil War. The first being the intrusion by the Pakistan military personnel into Indian-controlled Kashmir and capturing of a number of key high points in the mountainous ridges. ,The second phases includes India capturing a number of key transportation routes into the sectors with the Indian military pushing back the Pakistan forces back across the Line of Control in the third phase. On the Pakistani side, it is estimated that somewhere between 357 and 453 soldiers were killed. ,The aftermath,Four Param Vir Chakra and 11 Vir Chakra, India's highest and third-highest military decorations, were among the awards given to Indian soldiers following the war. ,India increased its spending in the defence sector after the Kargil War. It also completely overhauled its intelligence setup and significantly decreased the average age of Armed Forces personnel, based on recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee (KRC). The KRC had also recommended the creation of a new post – Chief of Defence Staff in 1999, and it was created in 2020 , with General Bipin Rawat taking over as the first CDS on January 1. ,Additionally, the Defence Intelligence Agency (2002) and the National Technical Research Organisation (2004) were also created as reformative steps following the war.

Exemplified by the two-day 'Tiraga Yatra' organized by the party's Youth Morcha- a fleet of flag-bearing bikes journey from Srinagar's Lal Chowk to the Kargil War Memorial- the overall mood is rife with hubris. Further, Youth Morcha President Tejasvi Surya has instructed attendees to carry soil from the martyrs' home- cue typically nauseating symbolism- to be donated at the memorial to mark their 'immortality'. A month after applicants to the armed forces were up in arms about the Agnipath Scheme, the BJP and its various factions are back to showing off their jawan-loving credentials. In bypassing long tenures, pensions and associated benefits, effectively reducing the rank and file of the armed forces to contractual positions. Amidst all this, recruitments in the Army have come to a standstill, leaving many facing uncertain futures. The government assures jawans jobs employment once contracts are up. More disturbingly, the arrangement leaves behind the possibility of private militias at the beck and call of the powerful; perhaps bodyguards for the bourgeoisie are what we are staring at in the future (not that it isn't the present). ,Another concern, swept aside by the charm offensive, is the high suicide numbers among soldiers. With 819 suicides- 642 in the Army, 29 in the Navy and 148 in the Air Force- the BJP's claims of caring the utmost for soldiers ring hollow. While sentiments on Kargil range from pride to (mock) sorrow, a more empathetic disposition would put this front and centre of their concerns. That empty gestures serve no material purpose is moot. But it does present a smokescreen for the malaise that runs through the country. If the Agnipath protests were any indication, a career in the armed forces is as much about securing a livelihood as the notion of pride accompanying it (if not more). suggested of the Indian Army suggested that the intruders comprised 70% <i>Mujahideen</i>

General of Military Operations (DGMO) kept reassuring his Indian counterpart

the Pakistan Army setting up base on Indian territory. Upon ascertaining the
points of incursion from local shepherds, the Indian Army launched Operation
Vijay. ,The Pakistani
soldiers and militants had positioned themselves at higher altitudes which gave
them a strategic advantage as they could fire on advancing Indian troops.
Pakistan shot down two Indian fighter jets while another fighter jets crashed
during the operation. ,Later on, Pakistan
asked the US to intervene. But President Bill Clinton declined to do so until
