UCL: Ansu Fati winner against Dynamo Kyiv keeps Barcelona's last 16 hopes alive
- FC Barcelona sealed their first victory under interim manager Sergi Barjuan
- Ansu Fati scored the only goal of the match
- Barcelona are in the second place in Group E
FC Barcelona sealed their first victory under interim manager Sergi Barjuan and kept their hopes of qualifying to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Ansu Fati found the back of the net in the second half to sink Dynamo Kyiv at home.
After winning only one of their last four league matches under manager Ronald Koeman, Barca president Joan Laporta decided to part ways with the Dutchman. Following the defeat against Rayo Vallecano, Koeman was relieved of his duties and Barjuan took over on a temporary basis while the search for a new manager is still on. While in Barjuan's league debut, Barcelona were held to 1-1 draw by Deportivo Alaves,
Even tonight, Barca's performance didn't improve drastically as they managed to dominate possession but failed to create clear-cut chances. Although the Catalan side peppered the Dynamo shot-stopper Georgiy Bushchan with regular shots, he didn't have to make out of the ordinary saves.
Barjuan had promised that his team would press high, and they did so early on, almost grabbing the lead after just three minutes when Memphis Depay rushed through challenges inside the Dynamo area and blasted a shot from only five yards that Ilya Zabarnyi stopped.
Sergio Busquets' fast clipped pass into the box nearly created another chance five minutes later, but Fati's effort was blocked. He, like Jordi Alba, was a long-distance into the area when he swiped at Gavi's cross on 15 minutes. But the initial momentum faded as the clock rolled by.
Late in the second half, Fati pivoted, swung, and fired the ball into the net for a goal he dedicated to Sergio Agüero after an Oscar Mingueza pass dropped to him. Ter Stegen had to make saves from Serhi Sydorchuk and Tsygankov before Zabarnyi's shot went just wide of the post, leaving Barcelona in second place in Group E. Although effectively they still need to beat Benfica to make it through to the knockouts.
