The Boeing 77-200 went missing while on its way from Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia to Beijing Capital International Airport in China. The plane went off radar roughly 40 minutes after takeoff. The flight, which was assumed to have crashed, was believed to be in a remote part of the southern Indian Ocean. A multi-million dollar search effort carried out by Malaysia, Australia and China led to no concrete clues as to the whereabouts of the plane.
Initial searches for the plane concentrated on the South China Sea. Later, it moved near several island nations.
The first piece of debris was not found until July 29, 2015, when the right-wing flaperon was discovered on a beach on the French island of Réunion. Two pieces, which were found months later, came from the cabin interior, suggesting that the plane had broken up.
Since the plane’s disappearance, several theories made the rounds including mechanical failure to pilot suicide.

In 2017, Australian authorities announced that the search operation is set to end. However, in case of any credible clues found during this time, authorities will plan the next level of the search.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which was leading the search, said in a report that the plane was likely out of control when it plunged into the ocean with its wing flaps not prepared for landing, casting doubt on theories a pilot deliberately crashed the plane.
