Two El Monte police officers died after they were shot while responding to an emergency call at a motel on Tuesday evening. The suspect was also hit by gunfire and succumbed to injuries at the scene, ABC 7 reported, quoting authorities.

The officers, whose identities have not been revealed, responded to the motel at the intersection of Garvey and Central avenues around 5 pm on Tuesday after receiving reports of a possible stabbing.

“The El Monte Police Department responded to a possible stabbing at the Siesta Inn and officers immediately took gunfire upon arrival,” the city statement said.

Both were rushed to LAC-USC Medical Center where they died.

“There are no words to describe our grief and devastation by this senseless act as we learned about the passing of two of our police officers. It weighs heavy on our hearts and we are sending our support to their families. We would also like to thank the El Monte community and our surrounding government agencies for the outpouring support we have received in the last few hours,” the City of El Monte, El Monte Police Department and El Monte Police Officers said in a statement.

Deputy David Yoo, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said the suspect was “down.”

Arthur Kingsbury, a witness, told Los Angeles Daily News that he returning home from work when he heard gunshots go off. He continued driving until he heard a few more gunshots. 

“I whipped my car into the parking lot and got out of my car when I saw the suspect, a male with no shirt, lifeless on the ground,” he told the outlet.
