In the early hours of Sunday in the New York metropolitan region, five children lost their lives and one was injured when their vehicle went off the road and crashed into a tree.

According to a news statement from Westchester County Public Safety, the victims, who included four boys and a girl, were between the ages of 8 and 17. The only person to survive the collision was a 9-year-old boy.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday, the Nissan Rogue containing the kids went off the Hutchinson River Parkway close to the Mamaroneck Road exit in Scarsdale, according to authorities. It then collided with a tree and caught fire. According to the press announcement, the driver of the vehicle seemed to be a 16-year-old boy. The collision didn’t involve any other cars.

According to Westchester County officials, the survivor presumably was in the hatchback section of the automobile and managed to escape out the back.

According to the press release, Westchester County authorities are looking into the crash‘s circumstances, and the police were working on Sunday to contact the families of the children who died. All of the victims are from Connecticut, and after their families are informed, their identities will be made public.
