An earthquake of 6.4 magnitude on the Richter’s scale was reported in Humboldt County, California, according to the United States Geological survey. The origin of the earthquake, which was recorded at 2:34 a.m. PT, lies 16.1 km below the earth’s surface.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has assured that there is no threat of a tsunami associated with the earthquake.

Humboldt County lies 7.5 miles away from the city of Ferndale which is about a drive of 20-mile southwest of Eureka. 

Californians on social media began talking about the earthquake.

A user took to Twitter and wrote that it was one of the most intense earthquakes for him and started getting Earthquake alerts.  

Another user said that tremors of the earthquake were felt in Santa Cruz County.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office has urged people to only call 911 in case of emergencies as he said “Power is out across the country.”

Reports suggest that there are two cases of injury with a head injury and a broken bone, but no fatalities have been reported. 

The CA Fire Scanner said on Twitter, “50k+ without power per PG&E in Humboldt County. Also significant cell outages per earlier traffic. The feed I have on doesn’t seem to cover Eureka, so I haven’t heard anything for there. CHP CAD: Fernbridge (bridge) reportedly has 4 cracks in it.”

Now, approximately 71,000 people in Humbolt Country are without power which makes up the 71% of the country’s customers.

According to the USGS, more than 12 aftershocks of the earthquake were felt in and around Humboldt County, with some recording a magnitude of 4.6.

As a measure of caution, Fernbridge connecting Ferndale will be closed for inspecting further. 

An earthquake struck exactly a year ago in the same area with a magnitude of 6.2 which also caused some damage.
