In a letter addressing the House Democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi gathered support for the establishment of an investigation commission which would be a “9/11-type commission” for investigating the US Capitol riots, according to US media reports.

She wrote in the letter, “To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an independent, outside, 9/11-type Commission to ‘report and investigate on the causes and facts relating to the January 6 domestic terrorist attack upon the US Capitol building”, reported CNN.

The proposed establishment process has been outlined in a traditional manner where the statute is required to get approval from the lower and upper house of the government, after which it will require the President’s stamp of approval.

However, the structure of the commission is proposed to be unusual and unconventional by bringing on people from outside the government instead of elected leaders and lawmakers of the US.

Lt. General Russel Honore (Retired) was announced as Pelosi’s pick to head the “infrastructure of security” review, which was proposed to be the primary target of the commission in light of the violent attacks at the US Capitol.

She wrote, “For the past few weeks, General Honoré has been assessing our security needs by reviewing what happened on January 6 and how we must ensure that it does not happen again,” the report said.

Building on the “diverse and representative cabinet policy” of US President Joe Biden, Pelosi said that the investigation commission formed for the attacks carried out by supporters of former US President Donald Trump will look “different” in comparison to the one formed after the deadly attacks on the US in 2001.

Asked then about who she had in mind to serve on the commission, Pelosi confirmed that members would not be serving on it, saying, “It’s an outside commission”, the report said.
