Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who has been ordered by the court to pay the families of Sandy Hook victims more than $1 billion after he spread lies about the 2012 massacre, filed for bankruptcy, court documents showed Friday.

The Infowars host filed bankruptcy documents in Texas, seeking Chapter 11 protection. In the papers, he claimed his net worth was down to between $1 million to $10 million and had debts of around the same amount. His claims come just weeks after a Connecticut jury ordered him to pay $965 million to the families of eight Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims. Incidentally, it comes just a day after rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, went on his podcast show and made an array of anti-semitic comments.

“I see good things about Hitler also. This guy invented highways, invented the very microphone that I used as a musician, you can’t say out loud that this person ever did anything good, and I’m done with that. I’m done with the classification, every human being has something of value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler,” he said during the live stream.

After news of his bankruptcy was reported online, Twitter users started trolling Jones for hosting West on his show.

“Alex Jones’ public relations managers seeing him invite an ‘I LIKE HITLER’ guest after he screamed about personally killing the Sandy Hook children,” one of them said, while another noted, “Alex Jones, who is already morally bankrupt, has filed for bankruptcy to avoid paying the Sandy Hook families.”

One more commented, “Alex Jones just filed for personal bankruptcy to protect his assets from Sandy Hook creditors. For most people, hosting Kanye’s Hitler lovefest would be the worst thing that happened to them all week. Not this guy!”

Another quipped, “Good morning beautiful people! It’s time for my favorite show: ‘consequences.’  Owe a billion dollars after defaming the Sandy Hook families and had a man defending Hitler on your show? Well well well…” One user wrote, “Shouldn’t they take off a couple trillion from Alex Jones Sandy Hook case since he pushed back on Hitler being a good guy?”

“Imagine having kanye west on your show one day saying he sees good things about hitler and then the next day u have to file for bankruptcy bc u owe $1.5b for saying sandy hook was fake like at that point id km (sic) personally,” another person tweeted.

Chris Mattei, an attorney for Sandy Hook families in the Connecticut lawsuit, said Jones cannot get away with not paying just because he filed for bankruptcy.

“Like every other cowardly move Alex Jones has made, this bankruptcy will not work,” Mattei said in a statement. “The bankruptcy system does not protect anyone who engages in intentional and egregious attacks on others, as Mr. Jones did. The American judicial system will hold Alex Jones accountable, and we will never stop working to enforce the jury’s verdict.”
