Alex Murdaugh, the disgraced legal scion apparently slaughtered his wife and son in the bid to buy himself some time as he knew that his financial ruin was going to get exposed.

On June 7, 2021, he called 911 at 10 p.m. claiming that he had found Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, critically shot near dog kennels at the family’s rural hunting estate of Moselle, in Islandton, South Carolina. He then told the first officers on the scene that the murders were tied to the 2019 boat crash in which 19-year-old Mallory Beach was killed.

Prosecutors have now alleged that the 54-year-old was trying to throw investigators off the scent by falsely linking the murders with the fatal boat crash for which a drunk Paul was facing criminal charges. Alex and his elder son, Buster were facing a wrongful death lawsuit.

Colleton County Court prosecutors have started in recent filings that the “clouds of Murdaugh’s past misdeeds” were gathering into “a perfect storm that was going to expose the real Alex Murdaugh.” According to them, Alex was  “an allegedly crooked lawyer and drug user who borrowed and stole wherever he could to stay afloat and one step ahead of detection.” He was facing imminent “legal, financial and personal ruin.”

The exposure of his financial misdeeds was due to happen on June 7, 2021 – the very day that they allege Murdaugh shot his wife and son in a bid to, “shift focus” away from himself and “buy some additional time to try and prevent his financial crimes from being uncovered.” His misdeeds included a mountain of debt running into millions.

The prosecutors will argue that he killed his own wife and son to create a distraction as he was confronted with an “immediate certainty of exposure,” on June 7, 2021.
