Former US President and business tycoon Donald Trump has been in the middle of a controversial case relating to an alleged affair with Playboy model Karen McDougal.

The case has been revolving around four parties, which include the US Federal Election Commission, Trump, McDougal and the publisher of The Enquirer, an American tabloid newspaper.

The involvement of The Enquirer was triggered before the 2016 presidential elections, which were taken away by Trump. The newspaper bought exclusive rights to the story of McDougal and never got around to running it, essentially wiping the story off the map.

Karen McDougal was paid a sum of $150,000 by the newspaper due to which she was not allowed to discuss the alleged affair with Trump in a public manner. The deal also ensured no other media house could cover the story.

Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who was later sentenced to prison time for various crimes, was involved in the payment made to McDougal, reported BBC citing federal officials.

However, Trump was recently excused by the Federal Election Commission, which ruled that he would not be subject to any further questioning on the matter.

Instead, a sum of $187,500 is to be paid by the publisher of the newspaper after the Commission found its acts as a violation of election rules.
