Multiple people were shot outside the Altria Theater in Richmond after Huguenot High School’s graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

The VCA sent out an alert just after 5 PM, saying that a shooting incident had taken place on the Monroe Park campus. Richmond Public Schools confirmed to NBC 12 that a shooting happened outside the theater. No other details are available.

Jefferson High School had a graduation scheduled this evening but it has been canceled.

Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney tweeted: “Currently monitoring the situation at Monroe Park. In touch with RPD and RPS. Will make information available as it comes in. Please avoid the area.”

“RPD is on scene for a shooting located at Laurel Street and Franklin Street. Multiple injuries reported. There is no immediate threat to the public. Briefing to follow. Avoid the area,” the Richmond Police Department said on Twitter.

Richmond Public Schools were scheduled to celebrate graduation ceremonies at Altria Theater. Huguenot High School had a ceremony scheduled at the theater around 4 pm while Thomas Jefferson High School had a celebration scheduled for later in the day.

Richmond Public Schools said they have canceled Thomas Jefferson High School’s ceremony scheduled for 7 PM on Tuesday. They plan to reschedule their graduation soon.

All RPS schools will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, June 7, out of “an abundance of caution,” according to a message sent to families.
