Coco Gauff, an 18-year-old from Florida, became the youngest Grand Slam women’s singles finalist. She rose to a career-best No. 13 in the WTA rankings after her runner-up finish to No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the French Open earlier this month. The 18-year-old jumped 10 spots by getting to her first Grand Slam final before losing to Swiatek 6-1, 6-3.
“First, I want to congratulate Iga. What you’ve done on tour the past couple months have truly been amazing and you totally deserve it. Hopefully we can play each other in more finals and maybe I can get a win on you one of these days,” she said after the French Open loss.
“I’d like to thank my team, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get this one today. But thank you guys for always supporting me, and hopefully, this is the first final of many… and most importantly, thank you (to the fans), you guys supported me even when I was down.”
Coco Gauff is the eldest of three siblings and was born in Florida. Her father, Corey Gauff, was an NCAA Division I basketball player, and her mother, Candi Gauff, was a former gymnast and track athlete. Corey wanted his daughter to play professional basketball, but she chose tennis instead, inspired by Serena and Venus Williams. She began playing tennis at the age of seven.
“I wasn’t much of a team person. I loved tennis. I was so-so about it in the beginning because when I was younger I didn’t want to practice at all. I just wanted to play with my friends. When I turned eight, that was when I played ‘Little Mo’ and after that, I decided to do that for the rest of my life,” US Open’s website quotes Coco Gauff.
The American tennis player lost in the final of the 2017 US Open and then went on to win the French Open Juniors the next year. She made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon in 2019 and gained a lot of attention by reaching the round of 16. In 2021, she reached the quarter-final of the French Open.
