In Januray 2022, Saudi Arabia restored full diplomatic relations with Thailand. The two countries agreed to transfer ambassadors.
The reconciliation took place during Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-formal Ocha’s visit to Saudi Arabia, which was the highest-level encounter between the two nations since 1989.

The relationship between the two parties first took a hit when a Thai janitor stole around $20 million worth of jewels from the palace of a Saudi prince in 1989. The robbery was known as the Blue Diamond scandal.

Thailand’s top police generals have been implicated in relation to the robbery but the truth is still a mystery. In 2014, a criminal court in Bangkok dismissed a case against five men, who were accused in the murder of Saudi businessman Mohammad al-Ruwaili.
