Amazon Quiz: (May 21) In which country is this famous movie set located?

India

USA

Germany

New Zealand

Answer: New Zealand

The Hobbiton Movie Set was a significant location used in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogy. It is located on a family-run farm in Waikato, New Zealand, about 8 kilometres west of Hinuera and 10 kilometres southwest of Matamata, and is now a Tolkien tourism destination, offering a guided tour of the set.

The Hinuera Formation, a series of alluvial silts, sands, and gravels deposited down during the last glacial epoch, underpins the area’s geology. Originally marshland, it was changed in the nineteenth century by a large-scale drainage work and is today fertile agricultural territory as well as a key racehorse breeding location.

In 1978, the Alexander family relocated to the 500-hectare property of rolling grassland where the set is located. It has since become a livestock ranch, with 13,000 sheep and 300 Angus beef cattle. Mutton, wool, and beef are the most important agricultural products.

When Peter Jackson first began looking for appropriate settings for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, he came across the Alexander Farm during an aerial search in 1998 and concluded that it was “like a slice of ancient England.” Set Decorator Alan Lee said that the hills “looked as though Hobbits had already begun excavations.” A lake with a lengthy arm that might double as a river is part of the property.
