An Arizona
court’s ruling that allows a near-complete ban on abortion had the state’s
Democrats vow that they will fight for women’s rights. The ruling allowed a
Civil War-era ban on abortion in the state to become active on statute books
after a Roe v. Wade era injunction was removed. Democrats hope the court ruling
and the ensuing anger among sections of women who see state’s control over
abortion as a violation of their rights will impact the November midterms.

Katie Hobbes,
the Democratic nominee for the Arizona governor post, along with Kris Mayes,
the nominee for attorney general, called on women to not sit on the side-lines
this year. “We cannot let (GOP candidate for Governor, Kari Lake) hold public
office and have the power to enact extreme anti-choice policies that she’s
spent her entire campaign touting,” Hobbes said at a news conference.

Kari Lake,
as well as Blake Masters, the Senate candidate, did not comment.

Republicans
have found it difficult to navigate the waters of abortion policy, according to
the Associated Press, which observed in its report on the Arizona abortion ban’s
political implications, that the abortion issue distracts attention from the
Republican Party’s attacks on Joe Biden and his record on border security and
inflation less than three weeks before the start of early and mail-in voting.

Abortion
rights are a critical point for suburban women who play a decisive role in
Arizona elections.

Barrett
Marson, a Republican consultant, said, “In Arizona, with a draconian abortion
law in effect today, I think you will see suburban women take a real look at
Democratic candidates who promise to do something even if it’s not in their power.”

But Republican
gubernatorial candidate Lake has been in favour of the ban. She’s referred to
abortion as “the ultimate sin” and has even said that abortion pills should be
illegal, AP says. Masters, the Senate candidate, has described himself as ‘100%
pro-life’ and gone on to say that he would support a bill proposed by Lindsay
Graham that would ban abortions nationwide after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
