Security has been beefed up in Washington ahead of President-elect
Joe Biden’s inauguration as thousands of armed pro-trump supporters were
allegedly plotting to surround the US Capitol, CNN reported, quoting the FBI.
On January 6, an angry mob of Trump supporters stormed
the Capitol Hill just
as Congress convened to validate Joe Biden’s presidential win. This
resulted in the deaths of five people, including an officer of the US
Capitol Police.
The FBI has now received information that “armed protest”
were being planned at the US Capitol and all 50 state capitols.
Meanwhile, Rep. Conor Lamb, a Pennsylvania Democrat, told
CNN that the pro-Trump supporters were planning to surround the Capitol in the days leading up to Biden’s
inauguration on January 20.
“They
were talking about 4,000 armed ‘patriots’ to surround the Capitol and prevent
any Democrat from going in. They have published rules of engagement, meaning
when you shoot and when you don’t. So this is an organized group that has a
plan. They are committed to doing what they’re doing because I think in their
minds, you know, they are patriots and they’re talking about 1776 and so this
is now a contest of wills,” Rep. Lamb said.
“We
are not negotiating with or reasoning with these people. They have to be
prosecuted. They have to be stopped. And unfortunately, that includes the
President, which is why he needs to be impeached and removed from office,” he
added.
With
the new terror threat, security is being stepped up in Washington. In a press
conference Monday, Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser urged Americans to avoid the
city during Biden’s inauguration and to participate virtually.
