US President Joe Biden is likely to announce his decision on the student loan debt forgiveness as the discussion has been running for months with top White House aides drafting the order.

While many reports speculated that it could come either Friday or Saturday when the president speaks at the Naval Academy’s commencement ceremony and at the University of Delaware’s ceremony respectively.

However, many also said that the announcement on student loan cancellation could be postponed given the recent mass shooting in Texas.

Biden and his team are zeroing in on canceling $10,000 per borrower, after the president had flat-out rejected larger amounts in April.

Advocacy organizations for borrowers and influential Democrats in Congress had urged Biden to wipe out $50,000 or more in student debt for every borrower.

According to the Center for American Progress, removing $10,000 in federal student loans would cancel the student loan debt of up to 16 million borrowers.

“No decisions have been made yet — but as a reminder no one has been required to pay a single dime of student loans since the president took office,” said deputy press secretary Vedant Patel.

The loan forgiveness would reportedly be limited to single borrowers who earned less than $150,000 last year, or jointly-filing married borrowers who earned less than $300,000 last year.

In his 2020 campaign, Biden supported forgiving at least $10,000 in federal student loans. Since taking office, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) have repeatedly pushed Biden on the issue.

Biden last month extended the pandemic moratorium on federal student loan payments and interest accrual through August.
