In what could be described as a bizarre incident, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, United States, witnessed a power outage on early Wednesday morning, September 7, 2022. The incident happened in the airport’s one of the two terminals, the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

Authorities also confirmed the incident on social media and revealed investigations were ongoing to search for the reason behind the power outage. “Airport teams have been dispatched to investigate the cause of the outage,” they said.

According to the KXAN, a spokesperson for the airport authorities revealed that backup generators restored the power partially sometime before 6:30 am. The airport authorities also confirmed that maintenance personnel were working to find the cause of the power outage, which had restricted flights from departing till 5:45 am. Flight status for the rest of the day has also been changed heavily as the airport authorities urge travellers to check their flight status.

As the airport was facing a power outage, the Austin Police Department blocked all gates to access the airport. As a result of the road blockage towards the airport, Highway 71 witnessed high traffic.

According to the airport authorities, no timeline has been established for the restoration of power. However, reports have suggested that an announcement was made inside the affected terminal that the power will resume in another hour.

Austin Energy, which is responsible for providing electricity to the city and the airport, is also working with the teams from the AUS in search of the source and restoring power. According to the publicly-owned utility company, all power lines for the airport are underground.

This is the second time this month that a power outage happened in the airport. Wednesday morning’s electricity outage began at 4:30 am and was not restored until the last update at 5:45 am.

Last Friday was the busiest day in the history of the airport. The rush was primarily because of the Labor Day holiday.
