Two suspected smuggling boats crashed near Black’s Beach in San Diego on Saturday night, killing at least eight people. At least one of two boats has capsized.

Here’s what we know so far about the incident –

1.The boats crashed in the Torrey Pines area late Saturday

2. At around 11:30 pm, a woman called 911 and told the dispatchers that she had come from Mexico via boat and that one of the vessels had overturned. The woman added that at least 10 people might be in the water from the capsized boat.

3. Police and lifeguards immediately responded the scene

4. San Diego police confirmed that eight bodies were recovered from the water off La Jolla Farms Road

5. Authorities are searching the area for additional victims.

6. Search efforts were hampered by thick fog.

“We tried to launch helicopters both from San Diego Fire and Coast Guard but due to the conditions, they couldn’t get up,. Coast Guard finally got up with their copter but due to the conditions of the fog in the area it was hard for their [forward-looking thermal imaging cameras] to get through to see anything in the water,” Daniel Eddy, San Diego Fire-Rescue’s Deputy Chief of Operations, told OnScene TV.

“Once all the conditions clear, we will have Coast Guard out here and San Diego Fire-Rescue and lifeguards doing a joint search through the water for any possible victims that are left,” he added.
