Due to a local investigation, authorities have put Bowie High School on lockdown and are advising parents to stay away from the area.

On Wednesday, June 7, around 1:15 p.m., the Bowie Police Department sent out a warning that the school was under lockdown for an unknown cause.

According to the city of Bowie, which sent out an email advisory at 12:05 p.m. on Wednesday, the police department will alert the public when the area is secure.

Due to a report of a person carrying a pistol close to the high school, Bowie High School and the Belair Annex of Bowie High were both still on lockdown as of 1:09 p.m.

The Bowie Police Department tweeted, “June 7, 1:15PM: BOWIE HIGH SCHOOL ON LOCKDOWN THE HIGH SCHOOL IS ON LOCKDOWN AT THIS TIME. FOR PICK UP, PLEASE STAY CLEAR OF THE SCHOOL FOR YOUR SAFETY, THE SAFETY OF THOSE INSIDE, AND THE POLICE OFFICERS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL. POLICE WILL ADVISE WHEN THE AREA IS SAFE.”

ATF Baltimore also tweeted in response to a tweet by Bowie Maryland, saying “ATF Special Agents are responding to assist our Bowie Police Department partners following reports of someone carrying a gun near Bowie High School. Direct all media inquiries to Bowie Police Department and follow @BowiePDNews @CityOfBowie for updates.”

Federal authorities have also joined in the search. No other information is available at this time.
