United States President Joe Biden’s address from the Capitol on Thursday delivered on its promise of “telling the truth” about the insurrection that occurred a year ago on January 6. Biden spoke about the “web of lies” made by the former President.

Here is a complete breakdown of the three lies addressed by Biden in his speech:

Donald Trump’s inaction

While addressing the lies, Biden said that the former President was “sitting in the private dining room off the Oval Office in the White House, watching it all on television and doing nothing for hours as police were assaulted, lives at risk, the nation’s Capitol under siege.” On multiple instances through the speech, Biden blamed his predecessor for inciting the violence in Washington DC exactly a year ago.

2020 Presidential elections

Trump claims about the 2020 Presidential elections— which were won by Biden by a substantial scale– were tagged as a lie in Thursday’s speech from the Capitol. “No election in American history has been more scrutinised”, Biden said while emphasising Trump’s failed attempts to obstruct the outcome.

The President referred to the multiple legal challenges erected by Trump and his administration officials, including the demand to recount the votes in states like Pennsylvania and Georgia.

“Let us speak plainly about what happened in 2020. Even before the first ballot was cast, the former president was preemptively sowing doubt about the election results. He built his lie over months, wasn’t based on any facts. He was just looking for an excuse, a pretext, to cover for the truth”, Biden said.

January 6 rioters are patriots

Biden leaned on the podium as he spoke about the “third lie” from Trump and yelled into the microphone, “Is that what you thought? When you looked at the mob ransacking the Capitol, destroying property, literally defecating in the hallways … hunting down members of Congress, patriots?”

He proceeded to give his own definition of “true patriots”, who “peacefully expressed their vote at the ballot box.”
