Chinese state
media on Monday reacted to the military takeover in Mynamar and detention of
elected leader Aung San Suu Ky by calling it a “major cabinet reshuffle”, AFP
reports.
According to the
official Xinhua news agency of China, Beijing described replacement of Myanmar ministers by the Burmese military a cabinet restructuring.
While the democratic leaders
around the world, including US President Joe Biden, strongly condemned the Myanmar coup and detention of an elected leader, China’s statement are seen as an attempt to avoid calling military coup an coup.
Meanwhile, an English language Chinese daily ‘Global Times’ tried to defend the military actions in a report quoting unnamed experts who see the Generals’ power-grab as “an adjustment to the country’s dysfunctional power structure.”
The paper, known
for its fiery reportage against China’s critics, also used the occasion to take
a shot at former US president Donald Trump, who remained an eloquent critic of
China throughout his tenure and plunged US-China ties to their lowest in
decades, by calling him Burmese military’s inspiration.
“Some experts
mentioned that… Trump, who refused to admit his election defeat and
reportedly incited the Capitol riots, might be the Myanmar military’s
inspiration,” its report read.
For those
unversed, Myanmar on Monday woke up to the news of military establishment in
the country after a 10-year experiment with democracy, with ex-general assuming
the role of President and army chief Min Aung Hlaing being handed over the “legislative, judicial and executive powers.”
The coup was followed by the detention of an elected member Aung San Suu Kyi. Myanmar’s ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) party called for the release of Suu Kyi and other detained leaders on Tuesday.
