Comedian John Oliver, who voted for the first time in the 2020 presidential election, following his naturalisation as US citizen, unloaded on the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump on a special segment of his show “Last Week Tonight,” on Sunday.

The British-American comedian dived right into the most important issue of the week, the results of the US Presidential election and didn’t mince his words while criticising Trump.

The 43-year old summed up the week as, “the days of counting, the misinformation, the desperate, pathetic attempts to paint this process as fraudulent — the fact is, Trump lost this election. He lost. All that bullshit which we’ve grown accustomed to seeing work, did not work this time. And it’s not like Trump and his family are going to stop. They’re going to carry on grifting and lying like they’ve always done. But once he’s out of the White House, it’s just not going to have the same effect anymore. It’s not going to directly impact every American’s life. And that alone is fucking fantastic.”

Oliver added that despite the long and hectic week, the end result of the Presidential election was a welcome respite as Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden emerged triumphant.

During his show, the comedian talked about how Americans across the length and breadth of the nation gathered to celebrate the coming to power of the 46th US President, Joe Biden.

“It is genuinely hard to overstate the level of relief that has been flying around parts of this country at the end of a truly draining week,” said Oliver.

Oliver then took a dig at journalists stating how despite warning American citizens ahead of the election, that results would be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, representatives of the fourth estate through caution out of the window as soon as the polling was over. Talking about an exchange between CNN journalist Don Lemon and a Philadelphia polling official Oliver talked about how journalists kept pestering voting officials with the same old question on when election results, joking such questions were as effective as asking “When penguins will learn to fly?”

Oliver termed Trump’s reaction to the election results as ‘expected’, and termed his premature declaration of victory on election night as ‘nightmarish.’

He added that Trump’s press conference on election night set the mood for the week and added how his campaign tried desperately to subvert the results of the election.

The comedian joked about the hypocritical demands of the Trump campaign who demanded counting of votes be stopped in states where President Trump was leading but allow counting to continue in states where he was behind.

Oliver also talked about the spurious claims made by Donald Trump on Twitter and added how the social media website had flagged incorrect data posted by the President.

Oliver ended the show by recalling how close to 140 million people voted in the election amid the pandemic and added, “We cannot and should not ignore that millions voted for Trump, meaning they either actively supported his bigotry or at the very least were comfortable enough with it to vote for him anyway.”
