An armed suspect opened fire on sheriff’s deputies and barricaded himself inside an apartment unit in Compton, California, on Thursday morning, following which a fire broke out in the building, ABC 7 reported.

Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the apartment building at the 100 block of Acadia Avenue shortly after 7.30 am on Thursday after receiving reports of shots being fired.

The responding officers immediately asked the residents to vacate.

The unidentified suspect then shot at the sheriff’s deputies before barricading himself inside a unit. Shortly after, thick black smoke was seen rising from the second-floor apartment.

A man, who was reportedly shot by the suspect before deputies arrived at the scene, was rushed to a hospital. His condition was unknown.

It was unclear if any law enforcement personnel sustained injuries in the shooting.
