Two Lexington police officers became involved in an on-duty shooting incident late Thursday night, September 1, 2022, that resulted in one person being injured. The shooting incident is now being probed by the Kentucky State Police.

According to Lawrence Weathers, the chief of Lexington police, the shooting incident took place sometime before 9:30 pm when the officers received reports of a stolen vehicle in the 1700 block of Jennifer Road, which is near the Eastland Parkway.

The two officers responded to the report of the occupied stolen vehicle and according to them, the driver did not comply with their instructions and quickly pulled out a gun and pointed it at them, which resulted in the police officers also pulling out firearms and firing their service weapons.

The police chief said that the driver of the vehicle was hit by the officers’ gunfire and suffered injuries that are not life-threatening. He was treated on the scene first and then taken to a local hospital for treatment and remained alert and spoke when he was transported. The two officers who responded were not injured.

“Medical care is our first concern for the suspect. That’s always top priority, getting him to the hospital, making sure he’s okay. That’s really our priority right now,” Sergeant Guy Miller told Lex18.

Weathers, the police chief also revealed that the two officers who shot the driver of the vehicle in question wore body cameras. However, as Kentucky State Police conducts their investigation, they will be put on administrative assignments, pending the results of the probe.
