A bicyclist died in a hospital after being hit by a car on Wednesday at Dana Point’s Pacific Coast Highway and then being stabbed by the driver.

The incident happened at 3 p.m., when a white Lexus automobile struck a cyclist traveling north on PCH at the intersection with Crown Valley Parkway, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The cyclist was struck from behind while stopped at a red light while traveling in the bike lane, according to the OCSD. According to authorities, the driver hit the cyclist on purpose. 

After that, the Lexus driver exited the vehicle and attacked the rider. 

The patient was taken urgently to a local hospital. Authorities announced the victim’s passing at 5:52 p.m. 

Citizens detained the unnamed driver at the site until law officers arrived and took him into custody.

“A cyclist was struck from behind by a suspect vehicle, being a white Lexus,” Sgt. Mike Woodroof with the O.C. Sheriff’s Department told KTLA.

Although the investigation is underway, Sgt. Woodroof stated that it is not yet known whether the motorist and rider were acquainted. Additionally, authorities do not know what caused the tragedy. 

“There were actually locals that were able to detain him until police arrived,” said OCSD Sergeant Mike Woodruff. “As far as relationship or motive, we have no idea at this time.”

While detectives gather information and clean up the site, locals and commuters were urged to avoid the vicinity of PCH and Crown Valley Parkway.
