Police have detained a 37-year-old man, Chad Keene, for shooting his girlfriend Karli Elliott, 30, at Daytona beach on Tuesday. 

The Daytona Beach Police Department said that the shooting happened at 11:56 AM near Glenview Boulevard. Elliott was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

In a press release, the police department said that that the Halifax Avenue is closed between Seabreeze and University boulevards. They also shut down Peninsula Drive in that area.

Three schools in the area — Beachside Elementary School, Lourdes Academy and Riverview Alternative Education Center — were on lockdown.

“A 30-year-old female was transported to Halifax Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries. We are actively looking for Chad Keene W/M DOB 10/04/1984, last seen in that immediate area, for the shooting death of Karli Elliott DOB 12/20/1991. In an abundance of caution, three neighboring schools have been placed in lock down. These include: Ortona Elementary, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Riverview Learning Center,” the press release read. 

Around 2:30 PM, the Volusia County Schools said the lockdown was lifted. Police later tweeted that all lockdowns were lifted.

“The lock downs on the schools near 315 Glenview have been lifted. The affected schools are back under normal status. These schools were originally placed on lock down due to an overabundance of caution. Thank you for your patience,”Daytona Beach Police Department said in a tweet.

Police Chief Jakari Young was quoted by wesh.com saying that Karli Elliott and her ex-boyfriend got into an argument at a 7-Eleven. The two went in separate directions when Elliott called Keene.

Elliott walked around the corner at Glenview Boulevard and Keene shot her on accident, intending to shoot the ex-boyfriend. 

The ex-boyfriend responded to the scene to give aid and is not considered a suspect, Young said.
