At least five people were hurt in an explosion in an illegal marijuana grow house in Detroit, Michigan, officials said. THC vape cartridges are suspected to have caused the blast. 

The incident took place in Schoolcraft and Mansfield Street between Greenfield Road and the Southfield Freeway.

Detroit Police said fire crews arrived at the scene before 5:30 p.m. Monday.

“We believe at this time this was an illegal marijuana grow house and the explosion was related to THC,” police told reporters. 

Detroit Fire Chief James Harris said that multiple people were hurt when the flames sparked around 7:20 PM. Videos posted on social media showed people being treated on the scene.

“We think it may have been an explosion. Five people were transported to the hospital. They are temporary-serious right now,” Harris said.

“I just heard a loud boom. I looked out, and then I just saw it on fire and a whole bunch of people coming out of it. I don’t know for real. Like, I assumed somebody was hurt. A building is on fire, and you see people coming out, so you assume that they would be hurt or something,” a witness, Tay West, said, as per clickondetroit.com.

“We thought it was lightning and thunder because trees were down on the other lot. They messed up a couple of cars. I heard a loud boom. I seen people run out half naked, with their clothes off,” a Frank Owens said.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. Authorities are carrying an investigation. 

Owens said that first responders were quick to react. 

“They got here quick, real quick. We called them. It’s bad what happened to them. Bad situation.”
