Russia accidentally targeted its own oil refinery in Luhansk province during its offensive Wednesday, The Kyiv Independent reported.
The Ukrainian media said that the refinery – owned by Rosneft, the state-controlled oil giant – was fired at by Moscow’s aircraft.
The first reports of the incident were circulated on Telegram by the governor of Luhansk province Serhiy Haidai. The official claimed that Russian troops had “fired at the Lysychansk plant.” In a separate shelling in the city of Severodonetsk, one person was killed and 10 others injured.

Haidai said that following the shelling, a fire broke out near the Lysychansk plant. Firefighters rushed to the scene to contain the blaze at the refinery.
However, the attack on the second largest state-controlled company in Russia could not be independently confirmed. There hasn’t been any official statement released about the same.
Rosneft’s plant in Lysychansk is capable of processing 16 million tons of oil per year, according to Ukrainian media. Since 2012, the plant has been reportedly closed for repairs.
It is believed that the plant was not operational at the time of the alleged attack.

Luhansk province, which is part of the Donbas region, has been the scene of conflict between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces since 2014.
Ukraine reportedly retains control of the northern part of Luhansk despite separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts having declared themselves independent from Kyiv.
Just days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine 2,028 people were evacuated from the Kiev region’s Hostomel, Nemishayevo, Vorzel, Dmytrivka, Peremohy, while 1,780 others moved out from the separatist Luhansk region’s Severodonetsk, Popasna, Hirs’ke, Rubizhne, Kreminna and Lysychansk.
On Tuesday, the U.S. embassy cited Ukraine’s foreign ministry saying Russian forces had forcibly deported 2,389 children from Donetsk and Luhansk and brought them to Russia. This action was described by Kyiv as “kidnapping.”
As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth week, military forces from both the countries continue to engage in fierce fighting, particularly near Mariupol. The port city is strategically located, and Russia is shelling it from the Sea of Azov.
