Attorney General Ken Paxton suggested on Tuesday that Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan step down because he was allegedly drunk to the point of being unable to function. Paxton also requested that Phelan, a fellow Republican, be investigated by the House General Investigating Committee.

“After much consideration, it is with profound disappointment that I call on Speaker Dade Phelan to resign at the end of this legislative session,” Paxton said. “Texans were dismayed to witness his performance presiding over the Texas House in a state of apparent debilitating intoxication. His conduct has negatively impacted the legislative process and constitutes a failure to live up to his duty to the public.”

“His failures as Speaker have created a credibility crisis for all Republican candidates and for our entire party,” Paxton added in the statement. “While I hope Speaker Phelan will get the help he needs, he has proven himself unworthy of Texans’ trust and incapable of leading the Texas House.”

Moreover, Rep. Andrew Murr, R-Junction, chair of the General Investigating Committee, also received a letter from Paxton urging him to launch an “investigation into Speaker Phelan for violation of House rules, state law, and for conduct unbecoming his position.” Paxton uploaded a screenshot of the letter to Twitter.

Over the weekend, the 44-second Phelan video clip started going viral on social media. Critics inside Phelan’s own party, like former state representative Jonathan Stickland, R-Bedford, advocated for it. However, supporters of Phelan pointed out that he appeared to speak normally both before and after the clip. A request for comment regarding Paxton’s statements received no response from Phelan’s office.
