Former US president Donald Trump on Thursday made an allegation that thousands of Haitian migrants flocking to the US border at Mexico ‘probably have AIDS’, according to US media reports.

While speaking to US political commentator Sean Hannity’s on his Fox News show, Trump, talking about the increase in Haitian migrants seeking refuge, said the onslaught is a “death wish for our country.”

Last month, thousands of Haitian migrants set up camps in a Texas border town. The number of migrants peaked as they were driven by confusion over the Biden administration’s policies and misinformation on social media converged at the border crossing connecting Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña, Mexico.

As US Homeland Security authorities attempted to regain control of the situation, upwards of 6,000 migrants were flown back to Haiti, with some also returning to Mexico.

While discussing Trump’s immigration policies and the president’s desire to build a “big beautiful wall,” Hannity claimed to be “pro-immigration.”

The US talk show host further asked Trump if people entering the country should be subjected to a coronavirus test and a health check, in addition to a security check, to which Trump replied, “So we have hundreds of thousands of people flowing in from Haiti. Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond. AIDS is a real problem.”

“Many of those people will probably have AIDS and they’re coming into our country and we don’t do anything about it,” Trump continued on Thursday, the Metro reported. “We let everybody come in. Sean, it’s like a death wish. It’s like a death wish for our country.”

The comments spurred criticism where some users pointed out his previous racist statements. Trump had earlier made a derogatory comment about Haiti once infamously referring to it as a “s***hole country” during a meeting with bipartisan senators at the White House in 2018.

Meanwhile, during Thursday’s show, Trump also claimed without any proof that ’50 countries’ are ’emptying their prisons’ and sending those inmates to the US, the Daily Mail reported.
