Outgoing US President Donald Trump is mulling over the possibility of pardoning himself before he leaves office on January 20, reports CNN. The reports come amid growing calls for his removal from the White House, after his supporters stormed the US Capitol building on Wednesday.

According to CNN, some of these conversations happened in recent weeks, and Trump has asked about the legal and political consequences of a self-pardon.

Hundreds of Trump supporters broke into the Capitol Building while the Congress was certifying Joe Biden’s electoral college victory. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers rebuked Trump’s conduct during the riots. The rioters clashed with police, resulting in four deaths.

It is not clear if the issue has come up since Wednesday’s mayhem at the Capitol building fomented by the President’s rhetoric or after his recent controversial call with the Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, the report said, citing multiple sources.

The embattled president has also sought legal opinions on his authority to grant a self-pardon. According to the report, Trump was advised against it due to the potential political fallout.

A presidential self-pardon is a phenomenon that hasn’t occured yet and experts are divided on the constitutionality of the move. A Justice Department legal memo says the president cannot pardon himself but he can step down and ask his vice president to take over and pardon him. However, that memo is not binding.

After losing to Joe Biden in the presidential elections in November, Trump has issued a series pardons to his family, friends and allies.
