In a court in Washington, DC, former US President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to the charge of attempting to rig the 2020 presidential election. He was indicted on Tuesday as part of the investigation by special counsel Jack Smith regarding his attempts to rig the election prior to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
He was charged with conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding in addition to conspiring to defraud the United States, obstructing and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiring against rights.

The next hearing in the case will be on August 28, five days after the first Republican presidential primary debate. Following the hearing, Trump denounced the new allegations brought against him and said they were part of a larger plot to sway the 2024 presidential election. He described the accusations as “a persecution of a political opponent.”
