Doug Burgum, North Dakota Governor, launched his campaign for 2024 US Presidential elections on Wednesday. At an event in Fargo, the Republican called for a “leader who’s clearly focused on three things, economy, energy, and national security.”

He will face the likes of Donald Trump, Mike Pence, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, Asa Hutchinson, Larry Elder, Tim Scott and Chris Christie in the primaries.

“We need new leadership to unleash our potential,” Burgum wrote in an editorial in The Wall Street Journal.’

Burgum married his first wife, Karen Stoker, in 1991. They had three children before divorcing in 2003. The North Dakota politician then married Kathryn Helgaas in 2016.

Doug Burgum is a former software company CEO. He first ran for governor in 2016 and won by 20 points. The 66-year-old was born in Arthur, North Dakota. He attended North Dakota State University (NDSU). He then went to the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

In 2008, the governor co-founded a company called Arthur Ventures. It was a venture capital firm that invests in ambitious, mission-driven software companies. The next year, then-Governor John Hoeven awarded Burgum the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award.

“Burgum has maintained his commitment and connection to his roots through family farm partnerships, by serving as a member for Arthur Companies, Inc., a diversified agribusiness company founded by his grandparents in 1906, and through a ranching partnership in the Badlands of western North Dakota,” the governor’s website reads.
