The Twitter owner said on November 7 that his historical party affiliation has been independent, with an actual voting history of entirely Democratic until this year, just hours after declaring his support for the Republican congress ahead of the midterm elections. Elon Musk added that he is open to the notion of casting a Democratic vote once more in the future in a subsequent tweet.

He wrote, “To be clear, my historical party affiliation has been Independent, with an actual voting history of entirely Democrat until this year” Later he added, “And I’m open to the idea of voting Democrat again in the future”

A representative of a popular social media platform has never advised users how to cast their votes in an election. However, earlier on November 7, Musk urged his more than 100 million Twitter followers to vote for Republicans in the November 8 midterm elections.

“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic,” Musk tweeted.

In a separate tweet, he wrote, “Hardcore Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other side, so independent voters are the ones who actually decide who’s in charge!”

Earlier this year, Musk suggested Twitter to be neutral

It is important to note that the billionaire had previously stated that the social media site should be politically neutral in order to earn the public’s trust in April of this year. He posted on Twitter, “For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally”

US President Joe Biden criticized Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter last week, saying that it “spews lies all across the world.” Musk presents himself as a supporter of free speech, echoing the worries of many Republicans who believe that the platform’s prior conservative-biased content moderation processes should be changed.

Musk previously stated that he voted Republican in a special election for a Texas House seat earlier this year, and that while he has previously voted for Democrats, he will now vote Republican because Democrats “have become the party of division and hate, so I can no longer support them.”
