Authorities have confirmed that the reactor at the power station has failed. As a result, miles away, heavy black smoke and flames could be seen.

No injuries have been reported from this fire, according to Public Safety. As of 10 p.m., Public Safety said that the fire and all associated dangers are restricted to Brunot Island. Duquesne Light and firefighters are still responding to the fire.

Fire workers had to take a ferry across to the island, according to police on the site. The island is not accessible by vehicle bridge. The reason for the failure of the reactor is not yet clear.

Several Duquesne Light facilities are located on the island, and the company recently finished the second stage of its Bruno Island-Crescent Transmission Reliability Project. The company repaired some of its older facilities and replaced transmission lines that connect Crescent Township to Brunot Island.
